Lucky escape for pensioner, 92, and woman as their car overturns near Lord’s Cricket Ground

An elderly couple had a miraculous escape after their car overturned in a smash near Lord’s Cricket Ground on Sunday.

The grey vehicle’s occupants – a 92-year-old man and a woman in her 80s – were freed from the wreckage.

One patient was taken to a major trauma centre as a priority and the other to a nearby hospital where they both remain.

Roads are closed causing chaos for crowds making their way to the stadium for The Hundred women’s and men’s finals.

Metropolitan Police officers were scrambled to a crash at the junction of Cavendish Road and Circus Road, St John’s Wood, at around 11.30am.

Pictures from the scene show the car, believed to be a Volkswagen, on its roof and with doors open and airbags deployed.

Police are seen speaking to members of the public as traffic builds.

A force spokeswoman said: “At 11.37am on Sunday, August 31, police responded to reports of a road traffic collision involving one car at the junction of Cavendish Road and Circus Road in St John’s Wood.

“They were later taken to hospital where their injuries were confirmed to be non-life-threatening or life-changing.

“The road remains closed while we await recovery of the vehicle.”

London Ambulance Service added: “We were called at 11.37am on August 31 to reports of a road traffic collision on Circus Road, NW8.

“We sent resources to the scene, including ambulance crews, an incident response officer, an equipment support vehicle and paramedics from our hazardous area response team.

“We also dispatched a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance."

“We treated two people at the scene.

“We took one patient to a major trauma centre as a priority and took the second patient to a hospital.”
