Loose Women's Jane Moore says Coronation 'pomp' has 'no place any more'

Jane Moore has claimed the "pomp and ceremony" of royal traditions "has no place" in today's society. The journalist and broadcaster was speaking on Loose Women today (Friday, April 21) as the panel discussed King Charles III's coronation on May 6.

The panellists on the ITV show were split on the subject, with Linda Robson appearing with Union Jack flags strewn across her and Sunetra Sarker excited about another 'party'. However, when the other panellist Kaye Adams asked Jane if she was excited about the historic occasion, she bluntly replied: "No."

After pausing to collect her thoughts as the studio audience laughed loudly, Jane, 60, went on to explain that she senses "a real shifting" with the death of the late Queen. She said: "Everybody knows the Queen, all the generations have had the Queen there the whole time throughout their lives, and I feel this is a real pivotal moment for the monarchy.

"It is the law of diminishing returns, and I think King Charles knows that, which is why he's scaling it down a little bit. I think probably, ultimately, it will become about 'they're good for tourism', but as for the rest of it - the pomp and ceremony - I don't really know if it has a place anymore".

She added: "I'm going to put it out there that we might have a King George, but it will be in a very diminished setting; it's going to get lower and lower and be low-key by then." Perhaps unsurprisingly, Linda disagreed with Jane's views, calling her "party pooper", reported the Daily Star.

In a poll on Loose Women's official Twitter account, the show asked its followers if they were excited for the coronation. Currently, 60 per cent answered 'no' and 40 per cent answered 'yes'.

It seems many viewers were in agreement with Linda, with Shaheen40514285 commenting: "There’s more important things going on in people’s lives I’m sure like what & when can we afford to pay next energy bill & how much have we got to spend on food. Let alone getting excited about the coronation it’s crazy!!!"

Sioux_Duncan replied: "Absolutely not. I'm going shopping." However, Amanda_watch said: "I am looking forward to it. Its history in the making and something that reaches throughout history."

And Dee37543342 wrote: "What a miserable lot. Even if you aren’t a Royalist, which I am, it will be a spectacular. I still remember Queen Elizabeth’s coronation in the 1950s. I would have been 4 years old."

Meanwhile, a YouGov survey of 4,246 adults published this week found 51 per cent believed the ceremony should not be funded by the Government. Another 32 per cent said that it should and the remainder responded that they did not know.

It prompted Labour's Richard Burgon to call for a House of Commons debate to consider the millions of pounds being spent by the Government on the ceremony. He said: "Given the report today that the King has a reported personal fortune of £1.8 billion, and given the monarch already benefits from not paying inheritance tax, it’s easy to see why so many people are not happy with this.

“So could we have a debate about the levels of public money being spent on the coronation, especially given the incredibly difficult economic situation that so many people are in?" The late Queen’s coronation cost £912,000 in 1953 – the equivalent of £20.5 million in today’s money, while Charles’s grandfather George VI was crowned at a cost of £454,000 in 1937 - worth £24.8 million in 2023, PA reported.
