Tube strike LIVE: London Underground network crippled as RMT walkout gets under way

The London Underground services have been crippled by a 24-hour walkout which got under way at midday on Tuesday.

Tube drivers who are members of the RMT union are striking in a dispute with Transport for London (TfL) over working hours.

The strike action already began to impact services on Tuesday morning, with the Circle line suspended as of 10am.

Commuters are also facing a second 24-hour walkout starting at midday on Thursday.

RMT walkout begins

12:01 , Tom Place

The RMT strike action has now officially begun.

All London Underground lines will be affected, with no service expected at all on the Piccadilly and Circle lines during the strikes and a reduced service running across all other lines.

Mildmay update

11:41 , Tom Place

Lines have now reopened between Willesden Junction and Richmond on the Mildmay line following the earlier fire alert in the South Acton Area.

That part of the line is now running albeit with severe delays, while there is a good service on the rest of the line.

Metropolitan line part suspended

The Metropolitan line has become the second like to close, with no service between Baker Street and Aldgate due to the strike action.

The rest of the line is still running with minor delays.

Elizbaeth line update

There are currently severe delays between Paddington and Heathrow Terminals & Reading due to a points failure at Hanwell.

There remains a good service on the rest of the line.

The Elizabeth line is one of the few lines that will not be impacted due to today’s strikes, and is expected to be busier than normal today as a result.

Strikes begin to hit commuters

The strikes are beginning to impact commuter journeys across London this morning.

The Circle line is already suspended, while most of the other major lines are also reporting delays ahead of the 12pm walkout.

Metropolitan and Victoria lines also delayed

Both the Metropolitan and Victoria lines are now also delayed, as tube services slowly grind to a halt this morning.

Central line severely delayed

The Central line is the latest to report severe delays due to the strike action.

Piccadilly line delays

The Piccadilly line delays are now affecting the whole line, as services continue to suffer due to the forthcoming strike action.

Jubilee line delayed

There are now minor delays on the whole of the Jubilee line due to the walkouts.

Disruption timeline

Today sees the first of two strikes this week, which will affect services over four consecutive days.

Further, similarly timed walkouts are also planned for May and June.

The strikes are officially set to begin at 12pm today, ending at 11.59am on Wednesday.

The second strike this week is set to occur between 12pm on Thursday and 11.59am on Friday.

Circle line suspended

The Circle line is now fully suspended due to the strike action, the first line to close following the walkouts.

The rest of the network will be following suit in the coming hours, with the majority shutting at 12pm.

Circle line update

The entire Circle line is now severely delayed due to strike action, with the disruption now also affecting the anticlockwise branch.

The Circle, District and Piccadilly line are now all reporting issues due to the walkouts - we will continue to update you when more lines are impacted.

Piccadilly line update

The strike action is also now impacting the Piccadilly line, with minor delays between Acton Town and Rayners Lane.

There is still a good service on the rest of the line for now - we will let you know when this changes.

Strike action begins

The planned strike action has begun to impact services.

There are currently severe delays on the Circle line clockwise only due to the strike action.

The majority of the network will have a normal service until around midday - but we will continue to update you as services begin to become disrupted.

Tube and Overground update

The Mildmay line remains part suspended between Willesden Junction and Richmond, while there are minor delays on the Windrush and Central lines.

There is a good service elsewhere on the network, ahead of the RMT strikes which will begin at midday.

Disruption near Silvertown Tunnel

08:47 , Tom Place

There are delays around the Silvertown Tunnel, with lane restrictions in place at the Leamouth Road Roundabout at the junction of A1261 Aspen Way in order to facilitate electrical cable works.

Traffic is currently slow moving westbound on Lower Lea Crossing on approach to the works.

A40 congestion

There is currently some disruption on the A40, due to the full closure of the A40 Westway and an eastbound lane closure on Harrow Road to facilitate joint replacement works.

There are short eastbound queues along the A40 approaching the Northern Roundabout, and delays in both directions of Wood Lane with short northbound queues from Wood Lane Station.

Windrush line update

The Windrush Line has now reopened between Sydenham and West Croydon following the earlier signal failure at Brockley.

That part of the line is now running with minor delays, while there is a good service on the rest of the line.

Mildmay and Windrush updates

Two Overground lines remain partially suspended this morning.

There is currently no service between Sydenham and West Croydon on the Windrush line due to a signal failure, and no service between between Willesden Junction and Richmond on the Mildmay line due to a fire alert.

Reduced service calling at Huntingdon

07:48 , Tom Place

A broken down freight train in the Huntingdon area is blocking means the line towards London.

A reduced service will therefore call at Huntingdon station, affecting a number of Great Northern and Thameslink services.

The disruption is expected until around 11am.

Central line update

There are minor delays on the Central Line due to train cancellations.

Why are the Tube strikes happening?

Today’s planned walkout will be the first in a series of six 24-hour strikes by drivers on the Tube in the coming months.

It comes after Transport for London (TfL) offered Tube drivers the chance to work a four-day week - but the RMT rejected the offer, citing driver fatigue and compromising safety, as the changes would mean drivers worked longer shifts on days they worked.

Tube strikes to begin at midday

The London Underground strikes will begin at midday today for 24 hours, and again from midday on Thursday (April 23) for 24 hours.

Union chiefs have been accused of timing the two 24-hour walkouts so they impact on the capital’s transport network over four days rather than just two.

Zack Polanski’s Green Party have been slammed over their support for the RMT union’s strikes.

Shadow Transport Secretary Richard Holden told the Standard: “We can see the chaos the Greens would bring to Britain.

“Strikes, disruption, and making ordinary working people pay the price for their weird far-left ideological politics.”

Mildmay line part suspended

The Mildmay line is currently partially suspended between Willesden Junction and Richmond, as a fire near the track in the South Acton Area means the line is blocked.

Trains that would run between the two stations will terminate and start back at Willesden Junction.

There is a good service on the rest of the line.

Windrush line part suspended

06:52 , Tom Place

There is currently no service on the Windrush line between Sydenham and West Croydon due to a signal failure at Brockley.

There is a good service on the rest of the line.

The signal failure is also affecting a number of Southern and Thameslink services, including towards London Gatwick Airport.

Trains have to run at reduced speed on some southbound lines, with this disruption expected for most of the day.
