Lizzo arms herself with a song and a lot of twerking to mock the Sydney Sweeney controversy that just won’t end

Lizzo has released a new song that takes direct aim at Sydney Sweeney and her controversial American Eagle campaign. The Grammy-winning singer shared a snippet of her track I’m Goin In Till October on Instagram, where she can be seen washing a car while wearing barely-there denim shorts, a matching jacket, and black heels.

The 37-year-old performer did not hold back in her criticism of the Emmy-nominated Euphoria actress. In the song, she twerked provocatively while delivering lyrics that directly reference Sweeney’s campaign. The visual similarities between Lizzo’s outfit and Sweeney’s American Eagle advertisement were hard to miss, as both featured all-denim looks.

According to Page Six, Lizzo arms herself with a song and a lot of twerking to mock the Sydney Sweeney controversy by rapping “Bitch, I got good jeans like I’m Sydney!” The line plays on the American Eagle campaign’s focus on promoting Sweeney’s “good jeans,” which became a source of significant backlash on social media platforms.

Sydney Sweeney’s campaign faces continued criticism

The controversy began when Sweeney’s July American Eagle advertisement sparked outrage among social media users, with critics calling it “clear eugenicist propaganda”. Many compared the campaign to Nazi propaganda due to its messaging about the actress having “good jeans.” The backlash was swift and widespread, with critics pointing to the unfortunate similarity between “jeans” and “genes” in the context of the advertisement.

This is not the first time Lizzo has targeted Sweeney over the campaign. Previously, the Truth Hurts singer reposted a digitally altered meme that showed her in a similar denim outfit to Sweeney’s advertisement. The original meme was captioned “If the Democrats won the election,” to which Lizzo added her own comment: “My jeans are black.”

Lizzo’s followers have responded positively to her latest dig at Sweeney. Comments on her Instagram post included laughing-crying and skull emojis, showing support for the comparison to the 27-year-old actress. The response suggests that many fans appreciate Lizzo’s bold approach to addressing the controversy.

Other celebrities have also joined in mocking Sweeney’s campaign. Doja Cat, who has her own history of facing backlash over controversial social media posts, made headlines last month when she posted a TikTok video reciting the commercial in an exaggerated Southern accent. The 29-year-old rapper said, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring, often determining traits like hair color, personality and even eye color. My jeans are blue.”

Meanwhile, Sweeney has remained largely silent about the ongoing criticism. The White Lotus actress has continued to make public appearances at karaoke nights and red carpet events, appearing unbothered by the controversy. She has not directly responded to either Lizzo’s or Doja Cat’s mockery of her advertisement.

The controversy has also brought renewed attention to Sweeney’s political background. Her conservative-leaning Instagram posts have resurfaced, including images from her mother’s 2022 MAGA-inspired birthday party and a 2019 trip to a gun range. Right-wing social media users have praised these posts, calling Sweeney a “valid American woman” and “wifey material.”

President Trump has also weighed in on the situation, calling Sweeney’s advertisement “hot” and “fantastic.” The Post recently revealed that Sweeney is a registered Republican, adding another layer to the political discourse surrounding the campaign. Despite the ongoing criticism, American Eagle has stood by their commercial, stating in a press release that it “always was about the jeans.”
