Liam Kearns to become next Offaly football manager

Liam Kearns is to take charge of the Offaly footballers.

The Kerry native was confirmed as the choice of the selection committee comprising county board chairman Michael Duignan, secretary Colm Cummins, treasurer Dervill Dolan, Paul Rouse and Stephen Darby.

The news comes as no surprise after the former Limerick, Laois and Tipperary manager was mooted as the man to succeed John Maughan earlier this week.

He will be ratified on a three-year term at the next county board meeting, while his wider management team will be confirmed at a later stage.

Although he led Laois to a Leinster final in 2007, Kearns's most notable managerial achievements were with Limerick and Tipperary.

His Limerick side came agonisingly close to a Munster title in 2004 before losing to Kerry in a replay, while the highlight of his reign in Tipp was a run to the All-Ireland semi-final in 2016.

Offaly endured a difficult season in 2022, Maughan's fourth at the helm, as they suffered relegation to Division Three, were dumped out of the Leinster Championship by Wexford and were soundly beaten by Westmeath in the Tailteann Cup.
