Leo Varadkar will make his Fine Gael politicians sign off on election expenses with the party’s Director of Compliance from now on in the wake of the Paschal Donohoe postergate controversy.
The Taoiseach was speaking at IFA headquarters in Bluebell on Tuesday night before the farm organisation’s AGM after public expenditure minister Mr Donohoe admitted to the Dail earlier in the evening that he inadvertently broken expenses ethics rules in the 2016 and 2020 general elections.
Mr Varadkar will be ordering his TDs and Senators to be more careful in their filing of returns in future in the wake of the political furore.

He said: “I think everyone has to be careful in filling in their statements of interests, any donations they received and also when it comes to electoral returns as well.
“It shouldn’t be seen as a box ticking exercise, or, just a couple of forms you have to fill in every now and then, it’s much more important than that.”
He added: “One service we offer as a party is that people can sit down with our Director of Compliance.
“As a party, we have a Director of Compliance and he’s available to sit down with TDs and Senators on an individual basis and we very much encourage them to do that because anyone can make an inadvertent error in their accounts and that service is there for them and available and I hope people will avail of it.”
