Leeds United's survival instinct reawakened as Whites set to discover injury importance

Currently sitting on 22 points and seven clear of the drop-zone, Leeds United are not in imminent danger, although the threat of relegation does remain.

Defeat to Newcastle United last time out was a disappointment, as the Whites squandered a fine opportunity to pull the drawbridge up on the bottom three.

Nevertheless, the Magpies' victory did not have huge ramifications on the Premier League standings - at least not as far as Leeds are concerned - but it means Marcelo Bielsa's side are still on bookmakers' long lists for the drop.

On Saturday evening, two sides currently occupying 19th and 20th in the table will do battle - Burnley and Watford.

The Clarets host the Hornets at Turf Moor with new signing Wout Weghorst expected to start following his move from VfL Wolfsburg, while new Watford boss Roy Hodgson will be in the dugout for the first time.

A win for Sean Dyche's men would see them climb to 18th, leaving Leeds eight points clear of bottom spot.

Victory for Watford on the other hand, has potential to be more concerning, as that would lift Hodgson's men out of the relegation zone, leaving Leeds just six clear.

If either side takes all three points in this evening's 6pm kick-off, Leeds' survival instinct will need to be reawakened as the bottom six tightens up and teams begin to trade places.

Depending on the result in tonight's bottom of the table fixture, Leeds will know whether gaining three points at Villa Park next week is imperative.

A draw between Burnley and Watford largely keeps matters the same, but victory for either - and the nature in which it is achieved - has the potential to crank up the heat.

Adam Forshaw is hopeful to be back for the trip to Aston Villa in midweek, however his inclusion - along with returning striker Patrick Bamford - may not be essential if the Hornets and Clarets cancel each other out.

Ideally, both players would make an immediate comeback to regular action, but given Leeds' injury troubles this season, it would be no surprise if the pair sat out proceedings against Villa.
