'Kingdom Hearts 4' Director Addresses Potential Delays Speculated For the Upcoming Sequel Game

Square Enix finally gave "Kingdom Hearts" fans a real release window for the long-awaited fourth mainline entry, but that announcement immediately triggered fresh doubts online.

Series director Tetsuya Nomura wasted no time addressing that skepticism directly, standing on stage at Disney's D23 event to reassure fans the date will hold.

Director Addresses 'Kingdom Hearts 4' Delays

During a "Kingdom Hearts" panel held the day after Square Enix confirmed the game's late 2027 release window, Nomura acknowledged the immediate wave of online speculation questioning whether that timeline would actually hold.

"We announced that the game is going to be coming late 2027 and I saw online that some people were saying, 'Oh, you know, maybe the actual release date might still get pushed back,'" said Nomura.

Speaking through an on-stage interpreter, Nomura said he wanted to set the record straight, stating plainly that a further delay "is not happening" (via ComicBook Gaming). The director also claimed that he too looks forward to the game's 2027 release.

Co-director Tai Yasue backed up that message during the same panel, telling the crowd that development is moving very smoothly and describing the project's current state as "not like an 80 percent, 90 percent thing" but rather "a 100 percent thing."

Yasue added that the team will be ready to deliver "for sure" within the announced window.

The assurance from the "Kingdom Hearts" bosses and its team is a significant one for long-time fans of the game that have known it for its delays and challenges.

Past 'Kingdom Hearts' Games Are Notorious

The skepticism from fans didn't come out of nowhere. The "Kingdom Hearts" franchise has a well-documented history of long gaps and shifting release dates between mainline entries, most notably the 14 years between "Kingdom Hearts 2" and "Kingdom Hearts 3," which itself went through repeated delays before finally launching.

Even with the newly confirmed late 2027 window, that would still mark roughly eight years since "Kingdom Hearts 3" released.

Adding to the uncertainty, "Kingdom Hearts 4" has also dealt with real production challenges behind the scenes, including a major transition to Unreal Engine 5 and the ongoing complexity of coordinating with Disney's wide library of licensed properties.

Despite those hurdles, no official postponement has been announced, and Square Enix's messaging around the late 2027 target has remained consistent since the reveal.

Nomura: 'Kingdom Hearts 4' Will be On Time

Square Enix confirmed "Kingdom Hearts 4's" late 2027 release window during Disney's D23 Entertainment Showcase on August 14, alongside a new trailer continuing Sora's journey through Quadratum and introducing additional locations and characters, including a new Pixar-inspired world based on "Coco."

The game has been confirmed for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, though an exact release day or month has not yet been shared.

Nomura's on-stage comments were echoed once again later in the same panel, reinforcing that the studio has no intention of walking back the announced timeline despite the franchise's history working against it.

Alongside "Kingdom Hearts 4" itself, Disney also used the event to reveal a new "Kingdom Hearts" anime series set within the franchise's world, telling an original story separate from the mainline games.

For now, both Nomura and Yasue's public assurances remain the clearest signal fans have that "Kingdom Hearts 4" is on track to finally arrive within its promised window.
