Juventus vs Man City LIVE: Pep Guardiola’s side make Club World Cup statement with five-goal thrashing

Manchester City have put the rest of the Club World Cup on notice as they thrashed Italian giants Juventus 5-2 to top their group and potentially avoid Real Madrid in the next round.

City started as they meant to continue and took the lead through a smart Jeremy Doku finish, made by the vision of Rayan Ait-Nouri. However, an Ederson blunder gave Juventus a reprieve, gifting Teun Koopmeiners an equaliser within just two minutes of taking the lead.

Pep Guardiola's promptly regained control and soon the lead through a horror own goal from Pierre Kalulu, before substitute Erling Haaland made it three after the break.

Goals from Phil Foden and Savinho - a thunderous strike - took the game out of sight for The Old Lady, even if Dusan Vlahovic fired in a consolation late on, with City sealing a statement win to top Group H and end the group stage as the only team to have won all three games.

Juventus 2-5 Man City

21:56 , Will Castle

90+2 mins: CHANCE! It should be six!

Haaland slots Cherki through who looks certain to score, but he overthinks it and can’t get the right finish away, with Di Gregorio getting down well to save.

That would’ve been the cherry on top of the cherry on top.

Juventus 2-5 Man City

21:54 , Will Castle

90+1 mins: THREE minutes added on. Just a formality.

Juventus 2-5 Man City

21:53 , Will Castle

89 mins: City are playing with swagger, and the crowd are loving it.

A Mexican wave travels around the Camping World Stadium - can you tell we’re in America?

GOAL! Juventus 2-5 Man City (Vlahovic, 84')

21:48 , Will Castle

Surely it’s too little too late, but finally Dusan Vlahovic has had a chance to show his worth!

Yildiz slots it through with a wonderful ball and Vlahovic makes no mistake with the finish.

It’s a consolation but something to cheer about nonetheless.

Juventus 1-5 Man City

21:45 , Will Castle

81 mins: A rare Juventus break forward sees Vlahovic try to test the City defence, but they hold firm as the chance goes with a wayward effort.

The Italians are chasing a lost cause at this point.

GOAL! Juventus 1-5 Man City (Savinho, 76')

21:40 , Will Castle

YOU DO NOT STOP THEM!

Di Gregorio thought he’d done enough when he got a big foot to Haaland’s effort from close range.

But as the ball came out to Savinho, he ROCKETS it off the underside of the bar to make it FIVE for City!

This is becoming a statement.

Juventus 1-4 Man City

21:38 , Will Castle

75 mins: City want to embarrass Juventus and are going for more.

Haaland lets fly on the edge of the box and Gatti has to get an important block in.

And now, Guardiola has brought on the explosive Rayan Cherki as well Nico O’Reilly.

GOAL! Juventus 1-4 Man City (Foden, 69')

21:34 , Will Castle

Just as City looked under threat of seeing their lead chipped away at, they’ve made it seemingly insurmountable!

It’s a simple finish for Foden after Haaland slipped it in behind the line, and City will now surely top the group!

Juventus 1-3 Man City

21:31 , Will Castle

68 mins: SAVE! Just the chance Juve were hoping for, but they’re denied by the flick of the wrist from Ederson!

It’s a brilliant ball from Yildiz who slips it through to Vlahovic, but the Serb’s deft attempt at a finish is swatted away by the on-rushing Ederson!

Juventus 1-3 Man City

21:30 , Will Castle

67 mins: Big cheer from the City-partisan crowd as Rodri’s first start since September comes to an end.

Gundogan is on in his stead, while Doku comes off for Foden. The Belgian’s had a great game.

Juventus 1-3 Man City

21:28 , Will Castle

65 mins: Kalulu into the book as he impedes Reijnders’ run in behind.

He had more than a handful of the Dutchman there, which is ironic because Juventus are really struggling to get a grip on this game.

Juventus 1-3 Man City

21:27 , Will Castle

64 mins: A lot of ankle punishment going on as Thuram runs his studs down the ankle of Bernardo Silva. No malicious intent there, but a painful one nonetheless.

The free-kick from wide is played short and leads to City winning another free-kick, this time in a more central position.

Silva could shoot but goes short to Doku, which proves unwise as his cross doesn’t beat the first man and the chance quickly goes.

Juventus 1-3 Man City

21:24 , Will Castle

61 mins: Juventus forced into another change after Savona landed badly on his ankle when under the challenge of Haaland, who is helped off by two medics.

Gatti is on in his place.

Juventus 1-3 Man City

21:21 , Will Castle

56 mins: That Haaland goal has settled any nerves that City would be punished for not making their first-half dominance completely count.

He nearly manages to get a shot at goal again but Savona defends well.

Triple substitute for Juve now - Thuram, Cambiaso and Yildiz are all on in place of Locatelli, Costa and Koopmeiners. All eyes on Yildiz who has been a superstar in the tournament so far.

GOAL! Juventus 1-3 Man City (Haaland, 52')

21:16 , Will Castle

It’s one of the more clumsy finishes of his 33 goals this season, but they all count!

Brilliant work from Man City, with Reijnders slipping it through for Nunes who puts it on a plate for Haaland to (just about) tap in!

Juventus 1-2 Man City

21:14 , Will Castle

50 mins: Another half-chance for City as Doku darts inside and onto the edge of the box, but he can’t get his body shape right and whips his effort high and wide.

Juventus 1-2 Man City

21:10 , Will Castle

46 mins: CHANCE! Almost an immediate impact from Haaland as Savinho fires it across the box, but it’s agonisingly too far in front of the outstretched leg of the Norwegian as the ball runs out of play.

BACK UNDERWAY! Juventus 1-2 Man City

21:09 , Will Castle

We’re off again!

As things stand, Man City are topping Group H - and Juventus will be asking RB Salzburg for a favour against Real Madrid.

The teams are back out!

21:08 , Will Castle

Here come the players - and bad news for Juventus, Erling Haaland is coming in for Man City.

It’s Omar Marmoush who makes way.

HALF-TIME! Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:59 , Will Castle

Do you know what this stadium used to be called? The Citrus Bowl. That’s a great name.

It’s now called the Camping World Stadium. This game, a Club World Cup crunch match between two of Europe’s biggest teams, is being played at the CAMPING WORLD STADIUM.

Stadium naming rights... it can’t go on like this, can it?

HALF-TIME! Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:51 , Will Castle

It’s an almost flattering scoreline for Juventus as Man City go into half-time in complete control.

From then on, City regained control and soon the lead through a horror own goal from Pierre Kalulu.

The only complaint from Pep Guardiola is that it’s only 2-1. Other than that, it’ll be an instruction of “more of the same”.

Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:50 , Will Castle

45+4 mins: OFF THE POST! You do not let Omar Marmoush hit it from there, or anywhere for that matter!

The Egyptian isn’t closed down and is allowed to let fly, with his swerving effort clipping the outside of the post.

That had Di Gregorio worried!

Juventus 1-2 Man City

45+1 mins: FOUR minutes added on.

City just ticking it about, showing their patience in build-up.

Juventus 1-2 Man City

44 mins: I say they want the rain to continue, and within an instant, it completely stops.

Blue skies are coming back. Approaching the end of regulation time in the first-half.

Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:45 , Will Castle

43 mins: The torrential rain has actually gee’d up the crowd - they want it to stay!

Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:43 , Will Castle

41 mins: SAVE! Ait-Nouri creates a problem with a really dangerous half-volley into the ground - Di Gregorio gets down well to push away.

The rain is TEEMING down! And in what is a very open Camping World Stadium, the fans and players are getting drenched.

Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:41 , Will Castle

38 mins: Offside flag goes up, thwarting an increasingly rare Juventus foray forward.

Up the other end, Savinho latches onto a cross-field ball from Reijnders and forces a driven effort towards goal, straight at the keeper.

The skies are darkening overhead. Looks like we’re getting some rain - a nice change from the desert heat that has been imposed on the tournament!

Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:37 , Will Castle

36 mins: Doku is loving life out there - Kalulu is hating it!

Doku takes on the Frenchman in the box and rounds him completely, forcing a teammate to come to the rescue and intervene.

Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:33 , Will Castle

32 mins: Marmoush tries to fire a shot to the far corner as he runs away from goal but can’t get enough on it - a simple save for Di Gregorio.

And that’s a water break!

Juventus 1-2 Man City

20:31 , Will Castle

29 mins: Man City are dominating the ball now. They nearly catch Juve out immediately from kick-off but a body gets in the way of Marmoush’s poke in behind.

Just ticking it around the box now, waiting for an opportunity.

GOAL! Juventus 1-2 Man City (Kalulu OG, 26')

20:28 , Will Castle

Oh, it’s an absolute NIGHTMARE for Juventus defender Kalulu!

City catch the back-line on the underlap before putting a low-ball across the box. Kalalu has no-one on him but he gets the clearance completely wrong, shinning into his own net!

That trumps Ederson’s for the biggest botch of the evening thus far.

Juventus 1-1 Man City

20:25 , Will Castle

23 mins: Shooting opportunity from a dead ball for City as Omar Marmoush steps up from about 25 yards out.

We know the Egyptian can hit them, and with such a short run-up, he absolutely rockets it - only against the wall, with an unfortunate Juve body going down.

Juventus 1-1 Man City

20:22 , Will Castle

20 mins: Good defending from the back-tracking Nunes as he thwarts Kostic to concede a corner.

The delivery goes over everyone in the box and Juventus recycle.

Juventus 1-1 Man City

20:19 , Will Castle

17 mins: Doku has been a real live wire so far.

With two men on him, he beats both and puts it into a really dangerous area, with Juventus having to concede the corner.

City’s main threat at the moment, the Belgian.

(Getty Images)

Juventus 1-1 Man City

20:18 , Will Castle

15 mins: Bernardo Silva tries feeding it through to Marmoush in the space but he just puts too much on it and it trickles through.

This game has started very open - chances at both ends.

GOAL! Juventus 1-1 Man City (Koopmeiners, 11')

20:14 , Will Castle

Just as City go ahead, their good work is done thanks to HOWLER from Ederson!

The Brazilian gifts the ball to Koopmeiners on the edge of his own box, who waltzes into the area to finish.

Nightmare.

GOAL! Juventus 0-1 Man City (Doku, 9')

20:11 , Will Castle

It’s finished by Doku, but that was all about the vision of Ait-Nouri!

The Algerian slots it through for the winger, wrong-footing the Juventus defence to allow Doku to cut in and smartly curl into the corner.

City strike first!

Juventus 0-0 Man City

20:09 , Will Castle

8 mins: Misplaced pass from Ederson nearly sparks a Juventus break but City’s defence are able to clean things up.

Juventus 0-0 Man City

20:08 , Will Castle

6 mins: City playing with a slightly different look tonight as they don dark blue shorts to avoid clashing with the white of Juventus.

Looking very Uruguay-esque tonight.

Juventus 0-0 Man City

20:06 , Will Castle

4 mins: SAVE! First big chance of the evening!

It’s whipped in by Ait-Nouri and falls to the head of Silva approaching the six-yard box, but the Portuguese can’t get it past Di Gregorio who does well to stick a leg out and save.

KICK-OFF! Juventus 0-0 Man City

20:03 , Will Castle

And we’re off!

Qualification is sorted. Avoiding Real Madrid is likely on the line.

Is this the worst case of stadium naming rights?

20:01 , Will Castle

A reminder that tonight’s Club World Cup crunch match is being played at the “Camping World Stadium”... absolute horror.

As far as awful stadium naming rights goes, does it get worse than that?

T-minus 10 minutes until kick-off!

19:50 , Will Castle

We are edging towards kick-off at in Orlando as Man City and Juventus clash to decide who gets top spot in Group H.

Dodging the test of Real Madrid in the last 16 looks near-certain to be on the line tonight, so what happens here could prove pivotal in both side’s push for Club World Cup glory.

Ederson lambasts ‘fake news’ around possible Man City exit

19:40 , Will Castle

Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has dismissed speculation he could leave the club as “fake news”.

“My future is here,” Ederson said. “Some friends send me lots of news, but 99 per cent is fake news.

“I understand you guys, you need the news, to put a ‘like’ on social media but there’s a lot of fake news around my name.

“My head is here. It stays with City. It means everything to go back to the Premier League and to try to win the Champions League as well. My mind is staying in the club.”

What Rayan Cherki’s Man City debut tells us about his future

19:30 , Jamie Johnson

At the home of the Philadelphia Eagles, there was an NFL-edge to Rayan Cherki’s first Manchester City appearance.

In the one-by-one player introductions, in the style of American football, Pep Guardiola’s new man entered centre stage for City.

He brings promise of a return to the sort of form that won the blue side of Manchester four consecutive Premier Leagues, after a season in which the club faltered and were miles off the title-winning pace set by Arne Slot’s impressive Liverpool.

Thomas Muller rejects complaints over heat at Club World Cup: ‘No excuses’

Thomas Muller has rejected complaints of “impossible” heat at the Club World Cup, citing his own age as a reason why younger players should have “no excuses”.

“We have to be in shape,” he said. “If an almost 36-year-old guy like me can run 90 minutes, then everybody should do it, so no excuses.”

Temperatures have hit high 30s in the United States during the tournament.

John Stones speaks out on his Man City future with clear statement

19:10 , Richard Jolly

John Stones has insisted he wants to stay at Manchester City and hopes to “shut down” any suggestions he will leave this summer.

Manager Pep Guardiola said he wants to trim his squad, which he described as “too long”, and now has seven centre-backs after the January signings of Vitor Reis and Abdukodir Khusanov. And Stones, 31, is about to enter the last year of his contract, having only started six Premier League games in an injury-hit campaign.

But the England international, who has not played since February, is adamant he has no intention of leaving the Etihad Stadium.

“I want to stay here,” Stones said. “I love it. I’m here to help the team. I don’t know if there’s been any speculation [about going], but I hope that this kind of shuts it down.”

‘It will be months until I reach my level’: Rodri admits he faces long road back to his best

19:00 , Will Castle

Manchester City linchpin Rodri admits it could be some time before he gets back to his best as he edges nearer a return from an ACL injury.

The Spain international said: “I feel very good and very happy to be here. It’s an amazing tournament to start again to play football. I’m really excited to join the team again.

“I feel very, very strong, to be honest. The (recovery) process was long, but I was taking my time. The most important thing was to keep focused and be strong, not be sad or whatever.

“One day I would come back and this day has finally come. I know it’s still going to be months until I reach my level but I’m so happy.”

Claudio Echeverri a serious doubt for Man City

18:30 , Will Castle

Claudio Echeverri will likely be absent for Manchester City’s crunch match with Juventus tonight after being spotted on crutches wearing a protective boot earlier this week.

The 19-year-old revelled in an attacking role and scored from a free-kick as City thrashed Al Ain of Abu Dhabi 6-0 in Atlanta to secure their place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup.

Yet the Argentinian, who only made his debut in the FA Cup final last month after arriving from River Plate in January, was forced off at half-time with a twisted ankle.

It was a disappointing end to a promising performance and one that suggested the youngster could have a role to play in Guardiola’s reshaped squad in the coming season.

Guardiola said Echeverri was “a little bit sore” and had to be replaced at the interval.

Good afternoon and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of Man City’s final Club World Cup group stage clash against Juventus!

Qualification for the knockouts is all tied up, but a win tonight for either side could prove pivotal in securing an easier last 16 draw.

That’s because the group runners-up will take on the winners of Group H, which barring a major shock against RB Salzburg will likely be Real Madrid.

This is therefore far from a dead-rubber, as both European giants eye a place in the history books as the first-ever winners of the reinvented Club World Cup.
