Jurgen Klopp echoes Thomas Tuchel rant as Liverpool boss reiterates wish that affects Chelsea

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has stated his annoyance with the fixture schedule his side have been tasked with, just weeks after Thomas Tuchel's rant.

Since the beginning of February, just over a month ago, the Blues have played eight times in all competitions - with Tuchel seeing his side in action another four times between now and the end of March.

The Chelsea boss was not pleased with the fixture schedule when quizzed on it last month following his team's victory against Crystal Palace after they had just been in action on the other side of the world in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Tuchel said: "If anybody wants to explain to me how to organise it and how we keep the quality in the game I am open to discussion but it's very hard to see how this should happen.

"I am a big fan of quality and not quantity. This should answer the question."

Tuchel is not the first manager in the Premier League to complain about how many matches their sides are playing in quick succession. In fact, his German compatriot Klopp, who is in charge of Liverpool, has bemoaned the fixture schedule just over 24 hours before his team take on Inter Milan in their second-leg of the UEFA Champions League round of 16 tie.

Klopp has called on the Premier League to introduce the five substitute rule. The extra two subs were allowed when football in England returned for "Project Restart" in 2020, but has since been scrapped.

The Reds manager said: "We played Sunday, Wednesday, Saturday and Tuesday. That's a horrible schedule. If we can make changes, we will do that. If it's not, it's not. It's essential that we go again for the five subs."

Tuchel's aforementioned rant about the congested fixture schedule came less than two months later where he called for the five substitution rule to be re-introduced in the English top-flight.

He said this in December: "For us it's the same situation as for anyone else. We have concerns, because we are not only football players and coaches, we are also fathers and have family members so we are also concerned and have doubts and fears.

"Still we are privileged to do our jobs and do what we love the most so it's kind of in between. I'm very impressed with how the team takes it.

"You know very well that the situation was very different when we arrived in Wolverhampton and had seven positive tests in three days.

"We had the feeling that we had an outbreak and wanted some time to deal with it mentally and to settle the team down. That was not the case and we lived with it. We tried to be as supportive as possible.

"I just can say on this occasion I would love to push for five substitutions because five substitutions were made to protect the players when coronavirus popped up and made life difficult.

"I think the situation is very serious and very challenging so if we decided to keep on playing at least we should have five changes to control the load."
