Families are set to splash out £54billion on holidays this year - 9% higher than in 2019.

Spending on holidays abroad is expected to reach £38.2billion, with Brits shelling out £15.7billion on UK-based trips.

But airlines have already confirmed that flights will continue to be cancelled, while airports have also said that some capacity will have to be reduced, which means more holidays ruined at short notice.

Mirror money reporter Sam Barker will be joined at 1pm today by consumer champion Martyn James to explain your money rights if you're going off on your summer holidays.

Knowing your rights can make the difference between enjoying your holiday or not - and can help you get your cash back if the worst does happen.

Our experts will explain your refund rights if a flight is cancelled, what to do if luggage gets lost, the ins and outs of travel insurance - and even the latest on holiday scammers trying to take your money.

Brits have been told to expect a summer of airport chaos.

This has been caused by a number of issues, including airlines struggling to recruit new staff after axing many at the start of the pandemic.

We should be prepared for more congested airport terminals, flights with not enough crew and worrying images of mountains of bags piling up.

It's crucial to keep well informed of your rights before you book your travel – and regulators website CAA.co.uk have a page on all your passenger rights in the event of disruption or cancellations.

By law, whenever your flight or seat is cancelled, the airline must find you a new flight, even if it's with another company.

But travel chaos has also struck the port at Dover - one of the major ways of getting to the continent.

Last week holidaymakers and lorry drivers sat in six-hour queues around Dover as millions hit the road on 'frantic Friday', while one motorist claims the crossing took him "30 hours".

Photos also showed a busy Bristol Airport and huge queues at check in at Heathrow Airport and London Stansted Airport as families tried to escape the UK for their summer holidays.

The chief executive of the Port of Dover has said there will be increased transaction times at the border due to extra checks needed since Brexit.
