Jobs Liz Truss could do next after being offered 'head of short stays' at travel firm

Liz Truss stood down as Prime Minister on Thursday after just 44 days in office - making her the shortest-serving PM in British history. Despite her tiny term, the 47-year-old is eligible to receive an annual allowance of £115,000 for simply fulfilling the role.

Government officials confirmed to the Mirror that there is no minimum period PMs must serve in order to be able to claim the Public Duty Cost Allowance and separately, she will also take home a £18,860 payout for leaving the post. The huge lifetime sum has sparked outrage considering how much time she actually spent in the position, with Labour Leader Keir Starmer demanding she must not accept it.

With this in mind, we've taken a satirical look at some of the jobs Ms Truss could take on following her Downing Street downfall, as suggested by people poking fun on Twitter, including a lucrative offer from a travel firm based in Manchester.

Cheesemonger

Before working her way up to the top spot as Prime Minister, Liz Truss was well remembered for her impassioned rant about cheese imports during her first cabinet post as environment secretary.

"I want to see us eating more British food here in Britain," she declared. "At the moment, we import two-thirds of all our apples. We import nine-tenths of all our pears. We import two-thirds of all our cheese. That... is... a... disgrace."

In response to her resignation tweet yesterday, one person said on Twitter that her obvious next move would involve cheese.

They replied: "I think you should start making post-politics career plans. You should obviously be a cheesemonger!"

An image of Truss also resurfaced in the morning of her resignation thanks to Deputy Labour Leader Angela Rayner.

She was pictured in a hairnet proudly holding crumpets inside a bakery, to which the opposition MP wrote alongside: "You're toast".

It could be another sign that a role in food manufacturing might be the way forward.

Liberal Democrats Leader

Remarkably, Truss transformed from an anti-Thatcher protester as a child in the 1980s and leading Oxford University's Liberal Democrat society to U-turning as a Tory praised for her right-wing politics later in life.

Some critics online have humorously created a conspiracy suggesting that her chaotic premiership as PM was all part of a bigger plan to drag the Tories through the mud, and eventually rejoin the Lib Dems.

LBC's James O'Brien tweeted last week: "If committed Lib Dem Liz Truss had decided in her twenties to infiltrate the Conservative Party in order to become leader & screw it up from the inside, how exactly would she have behaved differently over the last month?"

Many were in agreement, with one Twitter-user responding: "I knew it".

Another joked: "I've taken to fantasising about Liz Truss at university, late at night, stoned, explaining to her fellow Liberal Democrats about her 30-year plan to destroy the Tory Party. They laughed, then."

Although we're not sure what Ed Davey would think about making way for Truss.

Margaret Thatcher impersonator

The resemblance is uncanny (Getty)

In more recent times, Truss has been compared to former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher - making her a good contender to become a Thatcher impersonator for events and birthdays.

She has openly spoken about her admiration for the Iron Lady, saying she is an icon because "she turned our country around" during a tough period - she even branded her as a "world-changing leader".

The two were constantly compared throughout the Tory leadership contest, while Truss sported some uncanny outfit resemblances.

Most noticeable was Truss' penchant for pussybow blouses, with some critics saying it was no accident.

Meanwhile, eagle-eyed political pundits pointed out she overhauled her image with the help of changing how she spoke, following in the footsteps of Thatcher, who famously hired a voice coach from the National Theatre in her early political career after realising that the public had no appetite for her sometimes-shrill voice.

The elocution lessons transformed the late PM's voice as she became renowned for her slow speech style and deep vocals.

Truss appeared to have followed suit, as she gradually revealed a noticeably lower voice with a far slower delivery as she rose up the ranks to secure the top job.

Head of Short Stays

The offer is there... (On the Beach)

Truss has already been offered a new role within just hours of exiting No 10 as Head of Short Stays at On the Beach.

The holiday experts, who have seen a rise of up to 64 per cent in short-stay holidays this month, have offered Ms Truss the role after seeing the demand for mini breaks spark.

Seeing as she goes down in history as the shortest reigning Prime Minister ever, it caught the eyes of the recruitment team.

A spokesperson for On the Beach said: "Short stay holidays are becoming increasingly popular with customers, year on year, we've seen an increase in those heading away for four-day breaks.

"This demand has led to the opening of a new role here at On the Beach and we're delighted to be able to offer this position to Liz Truss. She has shown the true meaning of a short-term stay, breaking records along the way.

"We do have concerns over her ability to manage budgets and communicate well, however that's why we have our finance and communications teams already in place."

The travel firm says the top five most popular short-stay breaks are: Portugal, Malta, Tunisia, Cyprus, and Greece.

The spokesperson added: "We do hope that she accepts the job offer and she can pass her probation period.

"In preparation for her arrival we have removed all lettuces from our head office kitchen and upon her arrival will ban the vegetable from the building."

Watford FC manager

Just hours after Truss stepped down, over in the world of football, Aston Villa sacked manager Steven Gerrard following a 3-0 Premier League defeat at Fulham.

People on social media have joked about Truss and Gerrard bumping into each other at the Job Centre next week, while others have said she'd fit right in as Watford FC's next manager.

The club has gained a reputation for sacking managers, with around three taking to the role every year.

Mocking the team, an Arsenal fan wrote on Twitter: "BREAKING NEWS - Liz Truss is in the running to be the next manager at Watford as she says it offers more job security and longevity than her previous role.

"The club has declined to comment".
