JAMSHEDPUR: Two people were killed in Jharkhand's Jamshedpur after a truck veered off the road and fell onto a group of people participating in a procession for the idol immersion of goddess Durga. Four others sustained injuries in the incident, according to state health minister Banna Gupta.
The accident unfolded at Bodhanwala ghat under the jurisdiction of Bistupur police station, while the truck was navigating a slope.
Two of the injured individuals succumbed to their injuries at Tata Main Hospital, where the remaining four are currently receiving medical treatment, as reported by the health minister following his visit to the hospital. The condition of two of the injured is said to be critical.
All of the victims were part of the Kitadih Puja Committee in the Bagbera area and were taking part in the Durga idol immersion procession.
Health Minister Gupta instructed East Singhbhum District Civil Surgeon Dr. Jujhar Majhi and the hospital staff to ensure the proper treatment of the injured individuals.
Chief Minister Hemant Soren expressed his condolences over the loss of two lives during the idol immersion. He offered his prayers for the departed souls and extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. The district administration has provided medical assistance to those who were hurt.
The district administration urged devotees to prioritize their safety during the immersion processions. In the Steel City of Jamshedpur, numerous community Durga Puja committees organized immersion processions, drawing large crowds.
As part of security measures, divers were stationed at the ghats, and the police employed drones to monitor the activities and prevent any untoward incidents during the idol immersions.
