Jamie Redknapp brands Man Utd stars a "disgrace" in scathing rant after Brentford loss

Jamie Redknapp laid into Manchester United stars after the "embarrassing" 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Brentford on Saturday.

United were four down by half-time in a one-sided match at the Gtech Community Stadium as goals from Jay Dasilva, Mathias Jensen, Ben Mee and Bryan Mbuemo put the game beyond doubt. The afternoon quickly unfolded for the visitors after goalkeeper David de Gea let Dasilva's effort slip through his fingers and into the net.

Christian Eriksen was then dispossessed inside his own box against his former club, before Jensen capitalised. United simply fell apart from there and failed to mount any form of comeback as they effectively threw in the towel, leaving Redknapp and co-pundit Gary Neville tearing them to pieces at full-time.

Redknapp fumed on Sky Sports: "That is a disgrace from that point of view [United running nearly 15kilometres fewer than Brentford]. If you go in there and show the manager that, that is embarrassing.

"I don't think I've ever seen a more abject performance from a club which is one of the biggest in the world. Sometimes you get a lot of stick, but you've got to run around and show you care. I don't think they cared today."

Neville was similarly scathing as he conceded his old club have slipped to a "new low" in what was Erik ten Hag's second competitive match in charge. "Man Utd have proved under three different managers that they don't work as hard as the teams they are playing," Neville fumed.

"How long have we been saying that hard work beats talent when talent does work hard. That Man Utd team doesn't work hard enough, they don't run fast enough, but they are drained of all confidence.

"They are struggling badly and they have been for 12 months. They're not being helped and maybe someone would say they don't deserve help. I've been in struggling teams and you can see they're suffering and that has to come from above.

"But today was a new low - and it seems like continually Man Utd can surpass their previous lows. When is the lowest low going to come."

The two pundits then became embroiled in a heated row as Neville gave an impassioned view on United's current situation.

Ten Hag spoke after the game and conceded the result was "difficult for me and a surprise. The team has to take the responsibility and I feel sorry for the fans, we let them down.

"I asked them to play with belief and take responsibility, that is what they didn't do."

Pressed on United's problems, Ten Hag replied: "Only when we stick together we will overcome it. Don't get me wrong, the manager is the main responsibility and I take that but I have to give them belief and they have to get it by themselves.

"We are as a team in a difficult process and you expect a different start. It seems like what happens in the past last season, we bring to this season. We have to change that quickly."
