Jack Butland 'on brink' of Rangers transfer as Michael Beale set to land new Ibrox No1

Rangers are closing in on a new No1 with Jack Butland on the brink of a move to Ibrox, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claim Michael Beale is ready to make the former England international his first summer signing after being linked with the 30 year-old last year. Initial talks broke down between the duo with the goalkeeper making the move to Manchester United on loan.

His Crystal Palace contract expires at the end of June with Rangers now set to secure his services for next season says the same report. Allan McGregor looks set to end his time at the club come the end of the season and the 30-year-old will be handed the No1 jersey. Butland is the second name already linked with a move north with Norwich City star Kieran Dowell another name believed to be a target for the Light Blues.

The Rangers boss has stated a desire to add at least five new faces as part of his summer overhaul at the club. His recruitment drive kicked off in January with the captures of Todd Cantwell and Nicolas Raskin. A number of high profile players are out of contract in a matter of weeks including Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Ryan Jack and Steven Davis while a deal is yet to be finalised for the permanent capture of Malik Tillman.

Butland was on the bench for Manchester United as they reached the FA Cup Final after a penalty shootout win over English Premier League rivals Brighton. They will now face rivals Manchester City as they bid to win a double after securing the Carabao Cup.

Rangers hero Barry Ferguson previously named his former Birmingham City team-mate as an 'option' for the Ibrox men this summer and it looks likely that could be the case.

Jon McLaughlin and Robby McCrorie are both still under contract and will provide competition in the goalkeeping ranks with Beale hinting that McGregor could be ready to hang up his gloves in the summer.
