Apple has released iOS 26.5, the latest software update for iPhones, bringing a mix of privacy upgrades, visual changes, and smarter everyday features. The update introduces beta support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging, a new downloadable Pride Luminance wallpaper, and AI-powered Suggested Places recommendations inside Apple Maps.
The update is now rolling out globally for eligible iPhone users.
But while Apple’s official changelog sounds very “corporate presentation energy,” regular users online are already talking about what actually matters to them: finally getting encrypted RCS chats, discovering random new cafes through Maps, and yes — obsessing over the new wallpaper.
Your iPhone texts are getting more private
Probably the biggest update inside iOS 26.5 is support for end-to-end encrypted RCS messaging in beta.
Translation? Messaging between devices could start feeling way less annoying.
RCS is basically the modern replacement for old-school SMS texting. It supports features like typing indicators, better-quality media sharing, read receipts, and improved group chats. Apple had already started supporting RCS, but now encrypted RCS messaging is beginning to roll out with supported carriers.
So those blurry videos and chaotic green-bubble group chats? Apple is clearly trying to make them slightly less painful.
The rollout, however, will happen gradually depending on carrier support.
The new wallpaper is doing the most — in a good way
Apple also added a new downloadable “Pride Luminance” wallpaper that dynamically refracts colours as users move or unlock their phones.
Which is a very Apple way of saying:
“Your wallpaper now looks expensive.”
And dynamic wallpapers have quietly become one of the biggest reasons people update iOS immediately.
Apple Maps will show 'hidden spots'
Another noticeable addition is “Suggested Places” in Apple Maps.
The feature now recommends places based on trending locations nearby and users’ recent searches.
So if you’ve recently searched for coffee shops, bookstores, late-night food spots, or gyms, Maps may start nudging you with recommendations around your area.
It’s basically Apple trying to make Maps feel more alive — and a little more like social discovery apps people already spend hours scrolling through.
A bunch of small changes included
Like most iPhone updates, iOS 26.5 comes with several under-the-hood additions that many users will discover accidentally weeks later.
Some of them include:
- New App Store subscription payment options in the US
- Improvements to the Reminders app
- Easier Bluetooth pairing for Magic Mouse, Magic Keyboard, and Magic Trackpad accessories after USB-C connection
- New EU-specific features linked to third-party accessories and app distribution rules
- Early groundwork for possible sideloading-related changes in Brazil
Apple Maps is also reportedly preparing to introduce ads inside search results in the US and Canada later this summer — a move that may not excite users as much as the wallpaper did.
And yes, iOS 27 is already around the corner.
The funny thing about Apple software updates is that the internet barely finishes downloading one before the next version starts trending.
Apple is expected to officially unveil iOS 27 during WWDC 2026 on June 8, with the first developer beta likely arriving the same day.
So while iOS 26.5 is the update people are installing today, Apple fans are already busy asking the more important question:
“What’s coming next?”
