Something strange is going on at Walmart. Recently, TikTok user Fae (@starsquishya) bought a bag of Walmart’s Great Value bag of shrimp. But what was meant to be a tasty snack became something else entirely after the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a warning about the popular food item being exposed to a radioactive substance.
So, Fae did what any good poster would do and turned the toxic shock into some top-tier content.
In the viral TikTok, which has amassed 520,600 views, Fae held up the offending bag. An on-screen caption read, “Me because I have the radioactive Walmart shrimp that they just recalled.” She used the popular TikTok audio from Lilz Bullz that says, “I am the owner of the world’s only 24-carat gold Labubu.”
In the video description, she added: “I’M GONNA GET SUPERPOWERS!”
Fae didn’t immediately respond to The Mary Sue’s request for comment via TikTok comment.
Commenters (mostly) reacted in good humor
For the most part, commenters saw the funny side of the situation.
“If we’re getting shrimp from Walmart, you were already at risk I fear,” one wrote.
“So you’re telling me a radio activated these shrimp?” another quipped.
While a third shared, “I got weirded out about shrimp for 3 YEARS and a few weeks ago I FINALLY was like ‘I think it’s ok now’ and got the Walmart frozen shrimp and ate them.”
Elsewhere, the official PETA TikTok account decided to weigh in, with its comment reading: “Radioactive or not, it’s still a bag of dead bodies. It’s not just the radiation that’s toxic. Normalizing eating the bodies of animals is, too.”
To which @starsquishya replied: “skrimp gumbo….”
What’s up with Walmart’s shrimp?
As reported by the BBC, the FDA has warned the public that the shrimp could have potentially been exposed to a radioactive substance in shipping containers.
The substance in question is Caesium-137, which is the radioactive form of Caesium. As noted by FDA officials, prolonged exposure to this substance could cause cancer.
While a sample of breaded shrimp tested positive for radioactive material, the FDA added that this sample in particular “did not enter US commerce.”
Still, the FDA is warning customers who bought their shrimp from three specific batches, which were distributed at Walmarts across Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Texas and West Virginia.
The contaminated shipment came from an Indonesian supplier, which has since had its number of shipping containers denied entry to the U.S.
Speaking to the BBC, a Walmart representative said: “The health and safety of our customers is always a top priority. We have issued a sales restriction and removed this product from our impacted stores. We are working with the supplier to investigate.”
