I tried Home Bargains' new in-store bakery and their bargain sausage rolls, pastries and doughnuts are as good as Lidl or Greggs

Home Bargains is opening a set of bakeries across the UK that will sell a variety of pastries, bread and desserts. On Tuesday, July 11, we went to Home Bargains in Pentrebach Retail Park, Merthyr Tydfil, to try items from their already existing bakery.

The bargain retailer is known for selling inexpensive groceries, toys, homeware, gardening, beauty products and now bakery goods. Like other supermarkets - such as Lidl, Aldi, Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's - and bakeries -like Greggs - you can purchase sausage rolls, breakfast pastries, desserts, rolls and baguettes but for a fraction of a price.

Customers can purchase five small sausage rolls for £1.09, baguettes for 75p, cinnamon whirls for 55p, two vanilla crowns for 79p, cheese twist for 59p, croissants for £1.25, ten mini doughnuts (chocolate covered or filled with jam) for £1, or a pack of four doughnuts for just 99p. Although the selection of items is smaller than other retailers - especially Lidl which is renowned for its bakery - there's no denying its great value for money.

For example, a sausage roll in Greggs costs £1.20 - which has raised a whole 20p since 2021 - whereas a pack of five fresh sausage rolls in Home Bargains will cost you £1.09. There's no denying that a Greggs sausage roll is hard to beat, but Home Bargains gave it a good go, with a nice flakey pastry.

But the star of the show was Home Bargains dessert options. Its chocolate chip cookies were nice, very sugary and similar to ones you would get from other supermarkets, like Tesco and Sainsbury's. The mini jam doughnuts were also delicious, as they had a lot of flavour and were covered in icing sugar - also 10p cheaper than Asda's range.
