I found a hilariously deranged sci-fi comedy on Hulu — and you really should stream this overlooked gem

Sam Rockwell in Gentlemen Broncos.

Everyone loves to quote "Vote for Pedro," but the real ones know that director Jared Hess’s true masterpiece is actually "Gentlemen Broncos." It's a bizarre, hilarious gem of a film that puts "Napoleon Dynamite" to shame.

You might know Mike White as the genius creator behind "The White Lotus," but long before he was sweeping the Emmys, he was stealing scenes here as Dusty, a mullet-wearing, snake-handling weirdo. And that's just the tip of the iceberg: Jemaine Clement, Sam Rockwell and Jennifer Coolidge round out the cast for this quirkfest. And we doubt you've ever seen it, as good as it is.

It's stranger, grosser, and infinitely more interesting than its more famous predecessor. While "Napoleon" is quirky, "Gentlemen Broncos" is a lot more deranged. It dares to be repulsive and hilarious at the same time. It's high time for you to witness the madness of the Cyclops and the Yeast Lords before this cult classic fades back into obscurity. You're in luck, because it's streaming right now on Hulu.

What is ‘Gentlemen Broncos’ about?

Benjamin Purvis (Michael Angarano) is a lonely, homeschooled teen who loves to write science fiction novels. He heads out to a fantasy writing camp hoping to finally share his magnum opus, "Yeast Lords," with his idol, author Dr. Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement).

That decision, which he hoped would launch his career, ends up changing his life for the worse. Chevalier, in an attempt to revive his career, plagiarizes Benjamin's story and twists it into something unrecognizable.

This kicks off a hilariously pathetic rivalry as Benjamin tries to reclaim his work, leading to a collision between his low-budget home movie version and Chevalier’s glossed-up, stolen bestseller. Oh, and Jennifer Coolidge sells nightgowns in between all of that while Mike White becomes Benjamin's "guardian angel".

Why you should stream ‘Gentlemen Broncos’ on Hulu

While you should definitely stream this underrated gem on Hulu, let's face it — "Gentlemen Broncos" is clearly not for everyone, and that's alright. The fact that much of it revolves around projectile vomiting, yeast factories and flying deer with machine guns means some will be turned off immediately. But if you stay for the best parts, you'll have the best time you've had in recent memory with a movie.

You get a variety of genuinely gross moments and bursts of awkward silence that make the "cringe" parts of the story feel even weirder. More demerits against it for some, but points that movie explorers looking for unique experiences will love.

"Gentlemen Broncos" might look like a straightforward "dumb" comedy, but it's smarter than that. The stacked cast, including Mike White (yes, that's him in that long curly blonde wig), delivers performances that are somehow funnier than anything else in the Hess catalog. And it lets legends like Sam Rockwell and Jemaine Clement be absolutely unhinged. If you want to check out something insanely silly with some bite, head to Hulu and watch this movie now.
