There’s no worse hot dog eating experience than when the bun-to-frank ratio is off. That’s what happened to one Costco customer who swears the classic $1.50 food court option used to come with more bun.
“This is how I know that Costco’s been hit with the tariffs,” Elora Jean (@_elorajean_) jokes in a viral TikTok. “What happened to the bun?”
She shows that her hot dog, topped with ketchup, mustard, mayo, and relish, sticks out on either side of the bun.
“I remember always getting this as a kid. I swear to God there was more bun to the dog,” she says. However, after taking a first bite, she asserts that the hot dog “still slaps.”
She says you can’t forget the strawberry sundae, which she decided to try with chocolate rather than vanilla ice cream. The chocolate is “pretty good,” she says, and Costco’s sundae is better than Sam’s Club’s.
‘Don’t let them lie to you’
In the comments section, viewers were divided as to whether the bun had always been the same length as the hot dog.
“The bun has never been the length of the dog I fear,” user Kay wrote, followed by a crying emoji. Jean responded, “Bruh I feel so gaslighted right now,” with two crying emojis.
User Anne said, “As someone who gets a hotdog every time they go to costco…. that’s how the buns are.”
“No it’s been that way all along, those were my favorite bites, the two naked ends,” user Judy Fluty Moores wrote.
Others agreed with Jean, however.
“I’m with you,” user Lexi said. “The bun is definitely usually bigger with yellow speckles on it but that looks like a regular smegular hot dog bun.”
User 251_joseph wrote, “Don’t let them lie to you ! The bun was as long as the hot dog.”
“I think people lying to you, the hot dog was always longer but the bun was never that short,” another viewer said.
One viewer said if Jean wants a hot dog with more bun, there’s a place she can go. “Idkkkk we still got long buns at sams,” user Kiba said. Jean replied, “But the dog is noottt itttt.”
Are Costco’s hot dogs longer than the buns?
In an article comparing Costco and Sam’s Club hot dogs, Food Republic reports that the Costco hot dog is a little longer than the bun. The Sam’s Club bun and frank are similar in size, which creates a different eating experience.

“I definitely prefer the way Costco offers this balance because it doesn’t leave you with any part of a bite without hot dog and condiments since there’s extra dog,” writer Dani Zoeller opines. “With Sam’s Club, the hot dog and its bun are similar in size, making it easy for the dog to shift within the bun, giving you a chance at just biting into the bun without a hot dog — and for me, that equals a less desirable bite.”
