Chocolate
Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine. Both are harmful to pets. Dogs are most susceptible because their bodies cannot process these compounds very well. Dark chocolate and baking chocolate are the most toxic because they have the highest concentration of theobromine. Even a small amount of chocolate can cause vomiting, diarrhea, an increased heart rate, shaking, or seizures. In extreme cases, chocolate poisoning can be life-threatening.
Grapes and raisins
Grapes and raisins appear to be harmless, but they can cause sudden kidney failure in dogs. The alarming thing about them is that even a small amount can lead to a severe reaction. Symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, loss of appetite, and reduced urination. Immediate attention from a vet is required in case of ingestion.
Xylitol
Xylitol is a sugar substitute commonly used in sugar-free gum, candies, baked goods, and even peanut butter. For dogs, xylitol triggers a sudden release of insulin, resulting in a potentially deadly drop in blood sugar levels. Symptoms include vomiting, loss of coordination, seizures, and even liver failure. Even a small amount can be fatal.
Caffeine and alcohol
Coffee, tea, energy drinks, and alcohol are all toxic to a pet’s nervous system. Caffeine can cause agitation, rapid breathing, heart arrhythmias, and shaking. Alcohol, even in small amounts, can cause vomiting, confusion, breathing problems, and coma.
