Life is unfair, they say, but Hulu is leveling the playing field with its "Malcolm in the Middle" revival. And it's finally got a release date, so it's time to mark your calendar. "Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair" is set to premiere on Friday, April 10, with all four episodes. That's only a few months to wait before one of TV's most bonkers families returns, alongside a number of new and (likely unexpected) faces.
Alongside the release date announcement, Hulu released the first trailer for the miniseries, which gives us a look at some of the new faces and changes that have happened over the years.
,"My life is fantastic now," Malcolm reveals in the trailer. "All I had to do was stay away from my family!" Those prophetic words reveal that everything's about to change for the worse. Though it's a short glimpse of what's to come, we already get an eyeful of some seriously silly situations, with pink confetti, Malcolm hiding in a bathroom stall, and a wrecked wedding reception.
All the child prodigy fantasized about throughout the original series was escaping his family and he successfully did so for two decades. But Malcolm is reeled back in with a wedding anniversary, which seems par for the course when it comes to his unbelievably crass brood.
What to expect in 'Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Unfair'
Comprised of four 30-minute episodes, this miniseries is set around 20 years after the original series' end. It now follows Malcolm (Frankie Muniz), who lives with girlfriend Tristan (Kiana Madeira) and daughter Leah (Keeley Karsten).
When his parents, Hal (Bryan Cranston) and Lois (Jane Kaczmarek), ask that he grace them with his presence on their 40th birthday, Malcolm has to gather his new family and bring them together with his parents and siblings. As you can imagine, that creates something of a chaotic mess.
The sequel miniseries will include mostly the same cast, but with a few changes, namely the fact that Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey in the original show, is not returning. He will be replaced by "Wynonna Earp's" Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
Otherwise, Bryan Cranston (Hal), Jane Kaczmarek (Lois), Christopher Masterson (Francis), and Justin Berfield (Reese) are reprising their original characters. As far as new faces go, Anthony Timpano will play Malcolm's youngest brother, Jamie, and new, youngest sibling Kelly will be played by Vaughan Murrae.
The original series ran for seven seasons on Fox, from 2000 to 2006. It's considered the breakout sitcom for Cranston, who has since gone on to fill several iconic roles, including Walter White on "Breaking Bad."
There's not a lot to know about the plotline beyond what brings Malcolm back to the insanity of his family, but from what we can ascertain, not much has changed between the character and his siblings or parents. If you're ready to return to the show (or perhaps see it for the first time), you'll be able to see it all go down on April 10 on Hulu.
