The North East looks set for a weekend of bright spells and showers following a week that began with a freak heatwave.
According to the Met Office, the North East is set for a dry start to the weekend with some refreshing winds before rain as we head into the evening.
In a week when the mercury hit a record-breaking 36.8°C, many in the region will breathe a sigh of relief that the maximum temperature expected on Saturday will be a more pleasant 21 °C.

As the weekend continues, the North East looks set for further showers with these subsiding, giving way to some brighter spells towards Sunday evening.
According to the Met Office, you should expect the following conditions on Saturday: "Dry to start on Saturday with bright spells.
"Becoming increasingly cloudy through the morning with freshening winds and outbreaks of rain arriving from the west through the afternoon and evening. Maximum temperature 21 °C."
On Sunday, the following conditions are expected: "Windy with spells of rain, but also some brighter spells Sunday."
