Helen Mirren flaunts new 'electric' hairdo at Cannes as she vows to break ageism

Dame Helen Mirren stunned fans with a dramatic new look when she rocked up to Cannes Film Festival. The 77-year-old sported a completely different and 'electrifying' new hairdo on the opening night of the annual star-studded event in France.

The Queen star often wears her hair in a soft platinum bob, but she decided to live life on the wild side with her new appearance when she shocked her fans with an electric blue up-do for the opening night of the film festival.

The actress looked radiant as she made her way onto the red carpet in a gorgeous blue dress to compliment her striking look, even matching her nail polish to the new 'blue' theme as she arrived at the bash in France.

Later that evening, Dame Helen sported a stunning black lace gown as she attended a glitzy after-party, reports the Mirror.

It comes as the star has previously spoken openly about her drive in changing beauty standards for older women, with ladies of her generation being held to ageism for 'far too long.'

"It's extremely annoying to women of my generation and others following mine to have beauty products sold on a 15-year-old face," Helen told Grazia back in 2019.

"I don’t want to die young, so I'm going to get old! I think to stay engaged in life, to stay curious about life, to stay with a sense of learning about life, constantly."

Dame Helen, married to American director Taylor Hackford, left a lasting impression fans as one of the most recognised faces on stage and screen with her biographical drama film, The Queen, in 2006 where she played the titular role.

She also recently made a tribute to the late monarch Queen Elizabeth at the BAFTAs in February as Prince William looked on emotionally at the speech dedicated to his grandmother.

During the annual awards show, held at the Royal Festival Hall in London, she said: "BAFTAs relationship with Her Majesty was long-standing and BAFTA would not be what it is today without her loyal support.

"She supported over 50 cultural organisations and in 2013 it was her time to be honoured with a BAFTA in recognition of the Queens' outstanding patronage to film and television industries.

"Your Majesty you were our nation's leading star on behalf of BAFTA thank you for all you have done for our film and television industry."

She also recently revealed how she suffered an injury whilst working on set at her latest film Shazam, which she says she will "take to the grave" as it permanently altered her finger.

The actress told Lorraine Kelly the DC flick had quite an effect on her, revealing: “I broke my finger, rather famously. You see that bent finger, that straight finger. I now call it my Shazam finger. I’ll take it to the grave with me.”
