'Heartstopper' Season 4: Everything We Know

Rom-com fans have had their hearts aflutter ever since Netflix began adapting Alice Oseman's beloved YA LGBTQ+ book series Heartstopper. The romance series debuted in 2022 and most recently released its third season in fall 2024 to continue our favorite teen love stories!

Season 3 brought its typical dreamy charm, detailing the next chapter in Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson's (Kit Connor) romance, while also exploring serious real-world issues like mental health, eating disorders, and first sexual experiences, as well as a nuanced portrayal of asexuality and aromanticism. And with the addition of a cameo from Viscount Anthony Bridgerton (a.k.a. actor Jonathan Bailey) himself, you have truly unmissable TV.

Countless fans immediately binged the eight-episode installment and have been clamoring for news regarding an additional season. For a long while, it was rather unclear whether season 4 would happen. However, we finally know about the future of Heartstopper and whether season 4—or something else—is in store for the Netflix hit. Read on for everything we know so far.

Is 'Heartstopper' renewed for season 4?

No. Heartstopper will not return for season 4; however, the show isn't over. Rather than more episodes, the beloved teen show will end with a feature-length movie. After months in which the show's fate remained in limbo, Netflix announced the news on social media in April 2025,

"Heartstopper will return, bigger than ever," the streamer wrote in a post on X, accompanied by a poster featuring Nick and Charlie embracing with the text overlay, "Who fancies a movie then?"

The post also noted that the movie will be "based on Alice Oseman's upcoming volume six."

Oseman shared a statement with Netflix's Tudum about the film being greenlit. They said, "I am completely overjoyed that we will get to tell the end of the Heartstopper story."

The author/showrunner added, "I'm so grateful to everyone who has worked hard to make this possible and to the incredible fans of Heartstopper for your patience and passion. I cannot wait to bring this story to a magical conclusion."

Tudum revealed that Oseman will write the screenplay, while Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, Colette) will direct.

The decision to release a film instead of season 4 came about six months after the release of season 3. Given the long time without news of a renewal, many fans were concerned the show might be canceled. However, while Oseman and Netflix were presumably in the midst of figuring out how to move forward, the author tried to offer reassurance.

At a panel for the Waterstones Children's Book Festival in the U.K. in February 2025, Deadline reported that the writer offered fans an update. They said, "I’m working very hard behind the scenes to get us a renewal for Heartstopper...It is still ongoing, we don’t have a final answer yet, but there are so many people behind the scenes who are working really hard to make it happen."

Oseman added, "We’re feeling optimistic, we’re feeling hopeful, and hopefully we’ll be able to share some news about that sometime soon. Fingers crossed. Thank you so much for watching!"

Months later, in an April 2025 interview with Vogue, published before the news broke, star Kit Connor teased that the cast and crew were "working on something."

He said, "We are working on something and hopefully we’re making it happen...But we’ll see. No promises. I don’t want to do it if it’s not right."

The Warfare actor added that he'd "definitely like to do" another season "as long as it's done right." Now we know that the movie is the sole way Netflix is wrapping up the series.

When will the 'Heartstopper' movie come out?

Netflix has not confirmed when the Heartstopper movie will be released. And, considering the film is based on volume six of Oseman's series, it may be a while. Oseman is still writing the book and will have to shift gears to write the script, and then, of course, the movie will need to be filmed. We'd guess the movie won't hit streaming until late 2026 or early 2027 at the absolute earliest.

Who is in the 'Heartstopper' movie cast?

Netflix confirmed that the two leads, Joe Locke (Charlie) and Kit Connor (Nick), will return to reprise their roles in the Heartstopper movie. They will also serve as executive producers.

It remains unclear who else in the main ensemble will return for the movie. If we had to guess, it seems likely Yasmin Finney (Elle), William Gao (Tao), Corinna Brown (Tara), Kizzy Edgell (Darcy), Tobie Donovan (Isaac), Rhea Norwood (Imogen), Jenny Walser (Tori), Cormac Hyde-Corrin (Harry), and Darragh Hand (Michael) will make appearances. Hopefully, Olivia Colman, who played Nick's mother Sarah in seasons 1 and 2, will have at least a cameo, since she couldn't appear in season 3 due to scheduling conflicts.

What is the 'Heartstopper' movie about?

Tudum announced that the film will adapt Oseman's next Heatstopper graphic novel, set to be the sixth and final installment in the series. According to the official logline, it "will wrap up Nick and Charlie's journey," which may not be smooth sailing. The teaser states, "With Nick preparing to leave for university and Charlie finding new independence at school, the reality of a long-distance relationship begins to weigh on them. Doubts take hold, and their relationship faces its biggest challenge yet."

Though we don't know who else in the cast will appear in the film, the main lovebirds's besties will also be a focus of the movie. The logline adds that "Nick and Charlie’s friends are also navigating the ups and downs of love and friendship, confronting the bittersweet challenges of growing up and moving on."
