'GTA 4' Xbox 360 Devkit Found For $6.59 in Car Boot Sale Reveals Lost Zombies Mode

A forgotten piece of gaming history tied to "Grand Theft Auto 4" has resurfaced in the most unlikely way—an official Xbox 360 development kit reportedly purchased at a car boot sale for just £5 (about $6.59).

The unusual discovery has since drawn attention from gaming historians and long-time fans of the franchise. No one expected to see a gaming relic that should have been released 18 years ago.

In an interesting report by Kotaku, the collector named Jan initially believed he had picked up a modified Xbox 360 console. However, further inspection revealed it was an official Rockstar North development unit, complete with attached "Sidecar" hardware used for testing early game builds.

The origin of the device adds to its significance, as it was reportedly found in Edinburgh, home to Rockstar North, the studio behind Grand Theft Auto IV.

Hidden Files Reveal Scrapped Zombies Mode

After powering on the system, Jan allegedly uncovered a pre-release build of "GTA 4." Inside the files were traces of an unused "Zombies mode," a feature that was ultimately cut before the game's 2008 release.

The discovery has quickly gained traction online, with fans and preservation groups analyzing unfinished missions, early gameplay systems, and unused assets.

Comparisons between the development build and the final retail version are now circulating across gaming communities.

From £5 Purchase to High-Value Collector's Item

According to GameSpot, Jan reportedly purchased the device after spotting it among old electronics at a local market. At the time, he believed it might have resale value, but only later realized it contained developer tools and Rockstar branding tied to GTA IV's production.

Despite attempts to resell the unit for as much as $1,300, he has struggled to find a buyer and now reportedly accepts only in-person offers. He has, however, shared extracted files online, allowing fans and preservationists to study the unused content.

Gaming Community Reacts to Preservation Discovery

Rockstar Games has not issued any official comment regarding the leak or the dev kit's contents. Meanwhile, the discovery has created discussions about game preservation and the importance of protecting early development builds.

Amid the delays and controversies surrounding the upcoming "GTA 6," learning a fresh report like this feels like unlocking a very secret treasure from the past.

This somewhat reminded us of another horror-inspired content, such as the cemetery survival content from "GTA V Online."
