Google has launched a new experimental app for Windows PCs that adds a Spotlight-like search bar to your desktop. The tool, now available through Google Labs, is said to make finding files, apps, and web results faster without breaking your workflow.
The app works with a simple keyboard shortcut: press Alt + Space to pull up the search bar from anywhere on your PC. It allows you to search local files, installed applications, Google Drive documents, and the web, all without switching windows or pausing what you’re doing.
Moreover, the tool also comes with built-in Google Lens support, which means you can select anything on your screen and search it instantly. This also makes it easy to translate text in images, identify objects, or even get help solving homework problems. Besides advanced needs, AI Mode is there to give deeper, AI-powered responses, along with follow-up questions and relevant links for further exploration.
It’s important to keep in mind that the tool is currently under Google’s Labs experiments, so you’ll need to opt in to try it. Though interestingly, with this tool, Google is directly competing with Microsoft’s native Windows search and third-party tools.
However, this is not the only update from the house of Google. Recently, the company launched two shopping-focused features ahead of the holiday season. A new purchase tracking view now gathers all your orders and delivery updates into one organized list, so you don’t have to dig through multiple emails. Packages arriving within 24 hours will still be highlighted at the top of your inbox and in summary cards, but the new interface gives you a full overview of all your incoming deliveries. These features are already live on both mobile and web for personal Google accounts worldwide.
So with all these updates and features, one thing is clear: Google is silently making its services more integrated and helpful, whether you’re on a phone, the web, or now, a Windows PC.
