Gogglebox viewers praise show for highlighting cost of living reality amid energy cap increase

Gogglebox returned to our screens tonight (April 8) and while many of us love to use this show as a way of escaping, there was a rather important part being praised.

On April 1 the price cap for millions in the UK went up, meaning many are now paying as much as £100 extra per month.

According to Ofgem, the cap rise affects around 22 million customers with those on default tariffs paying by direct debit seeing an increase of £693 from £1,277 to £1,971 per year.

It also means that pre-payment customers will see an increase of £708 from £1,309 to £2,017.

The increase is said to be driven by a "record rise in global gas prices" over the last six months with wholesale prices "quadrupling" in the last year.

Reacting to shows such as Made in Chelsea, Peaky Blinders, and the latest news on the energy price hikes, the Gogglebox cast made their feeling pretty clear when it came to the cost of living - and so did people on Twitter.

Watching ITV News, Sophie said she has been turning her heating off.

Sid Siddiqui said he was having a £50 rise each month.

Rosin from Glasgow said: "Imagine how overwhelming this [energy rise] is for the average person let alone with everything else on top" whilst partner Joe, also from the city, added: "It's tough choices. Do you freeze? Do you eat? Do you buy clothes?"

Pete said he was "really worried" adding "what's going to happen in the future because it's really concerning."

Lee then told Jenny "I went to see my mum last week I said I was going to go outside because it was warmer outside than in here because I didn't want to say 'put your heating on'. I know she would have it on if she could afford it."

Taking to social media one said: "Glad they're showing the cost of living. It's affecting so many people. Well done #gogglebox for showing it."

Another added: "#Gogglebox perfectly capturing the nation’s mood re: the UK energy crisis"

A third tweeted: "My fuel bills have gone from £60 p/m, to £100 p/m."
