Goa wants records, documents that are in Portugal, Maharashtra, Daman and Diu, says CM Pramod Sawant

PANAJI: Reiterating his earlier statement, chief minister Pramod Sawant said that Goa aims to bring back records and documents from Portugal that could shed light on Goa’s pre-liberation history. Sawant also said that similar documents pertaining to Goa are lying with the Maharashtra government, and the Daman and Diu administration, which needs to be retrieved.

Sawant has already asked the archives and archaeology department to bring back the original documents.

“We require to bring back documents pertaining to Goa’s freedom struggle and other documents from Portugal. There are some documents with Maharashtra and we need to bring them back first. I think some documents will be with Daman and Diu and we need to bring those documents back too,” said Sawant.

Sawant, who was speaking at a special exhibition on archival records related to Goa’s freedom struggle, said that the documents will help Goans understand their past.

Meanwhile, the chief minister also expressed concern over the dilapidated archives and archaeology department and the danger posed to sensitive and historic archives.
