Ghislaine Maxwell claims inmate plotted to kill her as she slept in New York jail cell

Ghislaine Maxwell has claimed an inmate at a New York jail was plotting to murder her as she slept in her cell.

The 60-year-old, sentenced to 20 years behind bars for trafficking underage girls with Jeffrey Epstein in June this year, is serving her sentence at Florida’s low-security FCI Tallahassee prison.

After her arrest in July 2020 she was at the Metropolitan Detention Centre in New York as officers continued enquiries.

In claims made while speaking to the Sun Online, she said that during her time at the centre, an inmate was plotting to kill her as she slept.

Maxwell, convicted of five charges for recruiting and grooming four girls to have sexual encounters with Epstein, said: “There was a woman who made a threat to act in a plan to murder me as I was sleeping. That is real. That happened.

“Prisons are dangerous. I would tell anybody to do everything possible to avoid jail.

“Jails are not safe spaces. I have seen guards selling drugs and, God, being inappropriate in every which way.”

She added she “felt bad” for her “dear friend” Prince Andrew.

The December 2021 sentencing was the result of a month-long trial which was widely seen as the reckoning Epstein - who killed himself in a Manhattan jail cell in 2019 at age 66 while awaiting his own sex trafficking proceedings - never had.

After the sentencing she told the court meeting Epstein was the “biggest regret” of her life.

She said: “Your honour, it is hard for me to address the court after listening to the pain and anguish expressed today.

“The terrible impact on the lives of so many women is difficult to hear and even more difficult to absorb in its scale and extent. I want to acknowledge their suffering. I empathise deeply with all of the victims in this case”

“I acknowledge I have been a victim of helping Jeffrey Epstein commit these crimes. I realise I have been convicted of assisting Jeffrey Epstein to commit these crimes.

"My associate with Epstein will permanently stain me. It is the biggest regret of my life that I ever met him.”

Maxwell shares her sleeping quarters with two serial drug traffickers, one of whom is a ruthless gun-toting dealer with “a very significant conviction for using a machete with about a foot long blade”.

The convicted teen sex trafficker’s cell mates are Manda May Rowell and Shacara Bryant.

Between them, the pair have more than 70 convictions and are each currently serving five years for serious drug trafficking offences.

A source said: “Ghislaine’s bunk mates could not have come from more different and difficult upbringings than her.”
