Gaza latest: Israeli cabinet signs off on peace deal ahead of ceasefire with Hamas

Israel’s government has approved a Gaza peace plan for the release of all hostages from Hamas, in a move set to end the two-year-long conflict.

Benjamin Netanyahu’s office announced the approval after both a security cabinet meeting and a government minister’s briefing.

It comes as a senior US administration official shared Donald Trump’s "vision” of Gaza’s future, which would have a local police force but would not be allowed “to do a military buildup. All the terror infrastructure is destroyed, and Gaza could be a functioning economy."

An Israeli government spokesperson said that a ceasefire on the war-torn strip would go into force within 24 hours of the government meeting.

At this point, the Israeli military will withdraw to a smaller area of Gaza, and the 72-hour time window for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners will begin.

Trump announced at a cabinet meeting, “We secured the release of all of the remaining hostages, and they should be released on Monday or Tuesday. Getting them is a complicated process. I'd rather not tell you what they have to do to get them.”

US to send troops to Israel to monitor Gaza ceasefire deal

04:30 , Alisha Rahaman Sarkar

The US is sending about 200 troops to Israel to help support and monitor the ceasefire deal in Gaza as part of a team that includes partner nations, non-governmental organisations and private-sector players, US officials said.

The officials told the Associated Press on condition of anonymity that the US Central Command is going to establish a "civil-military coordination center" in Israel that will help facilitate the flow of humanitarian aid as well as logistical and security assistance into the territory wracked by two years of war.

The remarks provide some of the first details on how the ceasefire deal would be monitored and that the US military would have a role in that effort.

After Israel and Hamas agreed to the first phase of a Trump administration plan to halt the fighting, a litany of questions remain on next steps, including Hamas disarmament, a withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and a future government in the territory.

One of the officials said the new team will help monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the transition to a civilian government in Gaza.

The coordination center will be staffed by about 200 US service members who have expertise in transportation, planning, security, logistics and engineering, said the official, who noted that no American troops will be sent into Gaza.

It comes after Trump helped broker the first phase of a peace deal between Israel and Hamas.

Israeli Cabinet approves 'outline' of deal to release hostages held by Hamas

04:00 , Rachel Dobkin

Israel’s Cabinet early Friday approved President Donald Trump’s plan for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip and the release of all the remaining hostages held by Hamas, a key step toward ending a ruinous two-year war that has destabilized the Middle East.

A brief statement from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the Cabinet approved the “outline” of a deal to release the hostages, without mentioning other aspects of the plan that are more controversial.

The broader ceasefire plan included many unanswered questions, such as whether and how Hamas will disarm and who will govern Gaza. But the sides appeared closer than they have been in months to ending a war that has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, reduced much of Gaza to rubble, brought famine to parts of the territory and left dozens of hostages, living and dead, in Gaza.

The war, which began with Hamas’ deadly attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, has also triggered other conflicts in the region, sparked worldwide protests and led to allegations of genocide that Israel denies.

Trump to be the first U.S. president to address Israel's parliament in 17 years

01:30 , Rachel Dobkin

Donald Trump has been invited to address Israel’s parliament, known as the Knesset, an honor that hasn’t been given to a U.S. president in nearly two decades.

The presiding officer of the Knesset, Amir Ohana, wrote on X Thursday, “It is my profound honor and privilege to officially invite the greatest friend and ally of the Jewish people in modern history, [President Trump], to deliver a formal address to the nation before the Knesset.”

Trump told Axios Wednesday he’d “definitely” address the Knesset “if they want me to.” The president is expected to visit the Middle East in the coming days.

The last sitting president to address the Knesset was George W. Bush in 2008.

“It's a rare privilege for the American President to speak to the Knesset. Although the Prime Minister told me there is something even rarer, to have just one person in this chamber speaking at a time,” Bush said in his address.

Senior administration official says Israel will withdraw to line as cabinet approves plan

Thursday 9 October 2025 23:49 , Bryony Gooch

Reporting from Andrew Feinberg, Washington DC Correspondent.

A senior Trump administration official has said that now the Israeli cabinet has approved, Israel should withdraw to the line.

“Israel will withdraw to the line, and then we do the exchange right within 72 hours. And obviously everyone will push to do that quicker. I think that will take a lot of the pressure off everybody.

“And then what happens is we're going to work with the Israelis, and I think CENTCOM will be involved to set up kind of a joint task force, and then the international stabilization force will start building there.

“So that has to that now be created. There's been a lot of work done to put that together, but the ISF will basically be able to hopefully replace the IDF on the yellow line.”

Kushner and Witkoff remaining in Israel to make sure implementation occurs

Thursday 9 October 2025 23:30 , Bryony Gooch

Reporting by Andrew Feinberg, Washington DC Correspondent.

A Trump administration official said Kushner and Witkoff are remaining in Israel "just to make sure the implementation occurs.

There's still just a lot of ways that this can go wrong, so we're staying on top of the details to make sure everyone fulfills their obligations and that any misunderstandings are quickly discussed and adjudicated," they said.

"We really want to make sure that we get to the withdrawal, we get to the ceasefire, and then we get to place where the hostages can return home, the exchange is done, and then we'll go into the next phase, which is figuring out what comes next in Gaza, and we have a lot of concepts and ideas that we've been trying to get developed for a long time that now will have to get operationalized and hopefully done. So this is a very delicate time."

Officials believe "there's a real chance ... to get back to the good momentum that occurred at the end of the President Trump's first administration in the Middle East."

Witkoff and Kushner worked 'around the clock' on final plan

The plan was then "brought to other Middle Eastern countries and Arab leaders and harmonized so that we could really hear and get some feedback if we were on the right track, and we began to see a lot of positivity around it,” said a US administration official.

"We changed the document a little bit, and we began to have meetings. All coincided during UNGA, we were having meetings throughout UNGA with various Arab governments that were we felt were interlocutors here, among them, Turkey, Egypt and Qatar at the helm," the official said.

After UNGA, the official said Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner met "to work around the clock over that weekend" to put together the final plan that Trump could present to Netanyahu, including the apology to Qatar.

"It all went well. We had an announcement that we had the contours of a deal ready to go, and we agreed that we would convene in Sharm El Sheik, we would convene the three interlocutor countries, Turkey, led by their national their director of intelligence, Qatar, led by their prime minister, and Egypt led by their also Director of intelligence. Trump administration officials 'made a compelling case' to Netanyahu on deal

Thursday 9 October 2025 22:20 , Bryony Gooch

Reporting by Andrew Feinberg, The Independent’s Washington DC Correspondent.

Senior administration officials on press call just left Benjamin Netanyahu's home and presented to the Israeli cabinet on why they believe in the deal.

“I think we made a compelling case," the official said.

The plan "became very, very compelling, because what we did was we extracted a lot of the principles and several of the other negotiations that we had had. There was the negotiation in August that talked about a prisoner swap of a hostage swap of 10 people. We took principles from that, principles from other hostage releases. Put it all together. Gave some thought to where Hamas were, some of the things that they needed, where the Israelis were, and, of course, most importantly, where President Trump was.

“And we put those principles on a sheet of paper, and met with the Qataris, in particular, Sheik Mohammed, who has been really central and instrumental to this negotiation since, since the start of the conflict, and worked with him in New York to wordsmith the document."

The Independent’s Chief International Correspondent Bel Trew reports:

The mother of an Israeli soldier who died while fighting in Gaza in 2014 has warned Donald Trump and the other world leaders to “not allow Hamas to thwart you, otherwise the endless war will not end”, as she called for all the hostages to be released.

Leah Goldin, mother of Hadar Goldin, said in a statement: “This is a personal appeal to you: the President of the United States – Donald Trump; the Prime Minister of Israel – Netanyahu; the Emir of Qatar – Mohammed bin Thani; the President of Egypt – Abdel Fattah al-Sisi; the President of Turkey – Erdoğan – do not let Hamas play you, lie to you, and make a mockery of you – we will not allow it! You are the leaders that made this historic agreement happen, you are the ones who can ensure it is carried out and will not allow Hamas to thwart you. otherwise the endless war will not end. Your chapter in the history of great leadership is being written now. Peace or war depends solely on Hamas’s fulfillment of its obligations under the agreement – the agreement for which you are responsible.

Mission to evacuate north Gaza babies suspended amid ongoing fighting, UN says

Thursday 9 October 2025 20:30 , Bryony Gooch

The UN children's charity said on Thursday it had to suspend a pre-approved mission to transfer two newborn babies from Gaza City because they did not get Israeli security clearance as military operations continue despite a new ceasefire deal.

The babies are part of a group of 18 newborns in north Gaza hospitals whom UN agencies have been trying to evacuate amid an ongoing Israeli assault on the enclave's largest urban area.

The two newborns, both less than a month old, were left behind in incubators at Al Helo Hospital because they could not be safely transferred along with their parents who fled north Gaza alongside hundreds of thousands of others, UNICEF says.

"We put them in the back of the car and took them to our office and we were waiting for clearance to leave from there. Unfortunately we didn't get that clearance," Hamish Young, Senior Emergency Coordinator for UNICEF, said in a message sent to Reuters from Gaza City, speaking over machine gun fire.

COGAT, the arm of the Israeli military that oversees aid flows into Gaza, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It has previously disputed claims it does not allow medical transfers.
