Met Gala 2022: From feathers to moustaches, Irish stars Nicola Coughlan, Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley turn heads at event

Irish stars led the glamour at the star-studded Met Gala - with Nicola Coughlan, Paul Mescal and Jessie Buckley all gracing the famous steps for the first time.

Kim Kardashian’s Marilyn moment stole the show, as she turned up to the lavish event in New York City in the same dress Monroe wore when she famously sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy in 1962.

But elsewhere, Bridgerton’s Nicola Coughlan was busy turning heads of her own, as she took on this year’s theme of Gilded Glamour, celebrating the opening of the “In America: An Anthology of Fashion” exhibition on Monday.

The Galway native stunned as she made her Met Gala debut in an embroidered and feathered pink and black ball gown with matching cape, custom made by London-Irish designer Richard Quinn.

Documenting some of the night on social media, the Derry Girls star wrote: “Good at times like this to remember I used to work in a Spar.”

Speaking before she made her debut at the annual extravaganza at the iconic venue, she told Vogue magazine: “I can’t believe I’m really going.”

“This is the morning of the event and my dress is hanging up beside me. It feels surreal.

“The pieces feel amazing to wear, even when I put on the first toile it was beautifully cut. Richard and his team are so impressive.”

“We’re so thrilled to be working with Nicola. She’s the epitome of gilded glamour, especially since recently starring as the iconic Lady Whistledown in Bridgerton,” Quinn says of working with the actor.

Paul Mescal left the GAA shorts behind as he also made his Gala debut alongside his partner Phoebe Bridgers.

The Kildare native kept it simple as he donned an all black suit by Valentino whilst his new moustache continued to get fans talking at the black tie benefit, which is held to raise money for the Costume Institute.

The Normal People was also spotted enjoying a reunion with his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones on the red carpet.

Ahead of his attendance at the highly anticipated event, the Maynooth man, who now lives stateside, told GQ :“I’m currently pacing around Central Park on my own, I’m off to get my grooming done soon, it’s about 2.30pm here and the event starts in a couple of hours.

“I’m incredibly nervous, but also so excited.”

“There’s a big energy here in New York City, you can really feel it in the air. The Met Gala is the most alien thing I’ve ever done or been to. I’m excited to get the red carpet out the way successfully and not fall up those steps.”

Oscar nominee Jessie Buckley donned a similar look to the star, as she stood out amongst the crowd in an Elsa Schiaparelli pinstripe suit, teamed with a black fedora hat and a drawn on moustache.
