Snapshots full of poetry are presented during "The Sheltering Sky" which is running at Head High Second Floor, a non-profit art space in Chiang Mai, until Jan 21.
This is a solo exhibition by David Kwan Shon, a Hawaii-born artist with Korean roots, whose works on display reflect a period of about 40 years in his life during which he travelled between the US and Asia, hardly ever as a tourist but always as a true traveller and seeker.
This can be seen without a doubt when looking at his photos, which often resemble paintings. It is all about sensory impressions and feelings, and this gives his artistic work a certain truthfulness and timelessness.
Spanning four decades of observation and reflection, his photo narrative is rendered through multimedia and presented in three chapters. "The Staircase And Other Human Aspects" features laser prints on paper from Polaroids; the "Dark Room" sees black and white images from negative film and silver gelatin and prints on canvas; while "Drift Or Lay At Anchor" focuses on prints on canvas.
Born in Honolulu, Shon studied liberal arts at Hawaii Loa College in Kaneohe, with further emphasis on visual arts and theatre craft at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills, California. He is currently living in Chiang Mai.
