Former Manchester United star says Fergie is as sharp as ever - four years after brain haemorrhage

Alex Ferguson is in “great form” and is as sharp as ever, according to the man whose goal earned the legendary former Manchester United manager his first trophy at Old Trafford.

Former full-back Lee Martin scored the winner in the 1990 FA Cup replay against Crystal Palace to begin an era that returned 13 Premier League titles, two Champions Leagues and another four FA Cups.

He met with Fergie, who four years ago suffered a brain haemorrhage, only last week.

And he gave a positive update as to the 80-year-old’s health.

“I love him to bits,” said Martin. “I was at his golf day last week and he’s in great form, he’s in good nick and he remembers everything. His memory is unbelievable.

“He was talking about when we were over in Japan on tour, in ‘87 or so, and he could reel the team off.

“He’s an incredible guy and such a lovely fellow. I always enjoy when I go to golf days with him or meet up with him at the club.”

Martin added that Fergie remains as humble as ever, despite his incredible achievements during his Old Trafford reign.

“The manager knows what he did at the club, but he would never say ‘I did this’ or ‘I did that’,” insisted the former United and Celtic full-back.

“That’s just the humble kind of fellow that he is.

“It is amazing what he actually did for the club. The club is where it is now because of him.

“He’s nine years retired and it’s been a little bit of a struggle recently, but we’ll get back to where we want to be.

“We’ve got the right people at the club, a new manager, and these are interesting times for us.”
