Footballer claims he was racially abused twice in two weeks as player brands incidents as 'embarrassing'

Football chiefs are being urged to investigate claims that an Irvine Vics player was racially abused — for the second week in row.

Defender Chris Jackson says he suffered racist comments at the hands of players and fans during his side's 3-1 West of Scotland League Third Division victory against Port Glasgow at Portlea on Saturday.

Ayrshire Football News understands the allegations were noted in referee Barry Feery's report and both clubs are now waiting to see what action SFA and WOSFL chiefs take next.

Jackson detailed claims in a post-match tweet and revealed he was subject to further abuse in the previous week's 3-3 draw at home to Lanark United. That incident led to a supporter being escorted from the ground.

The player said: "Played football a long time but the amount of racial abuse from fans and players today was shocking and embarrassing for a club not going to mention who they are but that's two weeks in a row and at the level we play at is not on."

Irvine Vics have publicly stated their support for Jackson while Port Glasgow have issued a statement vowing to 'robustly defend' the allegations.

Vics treasurer Willie Loach said: "We would sincerely hope that the powers-that-be look into Saturday's incident.

"We will also be seeking clarity on what we can do if something like this happens again in the future.

"We have seen players walk off the field of play before at the highest level but don't know if there would be any repercussions for something like that at our level.

"As a club we condemn all forms of racism and after the last two weeks we feel it's important that certain matters are addressed.

"We will be writing to the SFA, the WoSFL, the referee's department and SFA Compliance officer in due course."

Port Glasgow say they will welcome any form of investigation.

A statement published on the club's Facebook page said: "Port Glasgow are aware of the allegations made against the club of alleged racist incidents taking place in our match yesterday at home to Irvine Victoria.

"Port Glasgow take any allegation of racist behaviour very seriously, the club do not condone any form of racist behaviour.

"The club welcomes and will fully support any form of investigation into these alleged incidents, however, we will robustly defend our player and fans as we believe these allegations to be false and without foundation.

"The club will make no further comment on this until these allegations have been investigated fully."
