Film studio Blumhouse Productions is going to make horror games now

Blumhouse Productions, makers of horror films such as M3GAN and Halloween Ends, are moving into game development. The studio announced it’s launching Blumhouse Games as a subsidiary, with the intent to focus on partnering with independent developers to bring original horror games to PC, console, and mobile devices.

Zach Wood will act as Blumhouse Games’ president, with Don Scheler as CFO.

Wood has worked in game production for 25 years in various capacities, including senior producer on the hit indie game Hohokum and, more recently, contributing to Arkane and Bethesda’s upcoming horror shooter Redfall.

Scheler previously worked as head of finance and strategy in PlayStation’s publisher and developer relations division.

“Through my time in the industry, I’ve had the good fortune of working closely with developers to bring their ideas to life,” Wood said. “There’s a unique opportunity for horror and genre in the indie game space, and I’m thrilled about teaming up with Blumhouse to meaningfully leverage the company’s brand, reputation, and creative talent.”

While there’s no word yet on what Blumhouse Games’ first projects will be, it seems Blumhouse is following a similar model as DreadXP. That studio began life as a maker and publisher of indie horror films before moving into game development and publishing. Now, DreadXP partners with small, independent developers and releases collections of horror games periodically to a dedicated audience.
