Farage reported to standards watchdog over donations from convicted money launderer

  • Nigel Farage is facing calls for an Electoral Commission investigation into alleged undeclared donations from convicted money launderer George Cottrell between 2019 and 2024.
  • Ben Habib, former deputy leader of Reform UK , and Labour chair Anna Turley have both formally requested the watchdog probe claims that Cottrell provided Farage with accommodation, security, and staff.
  • Reform UK maintains that Farage was not politically active before the 2024 general election and declared all appropriate donations.
  • However, Habib disputes this, stating Farage was a major shareholder and director of Reform UK, and actively involved in party matters, making him a regulated donee.
  • The Electoral Commission has clarified that its rules on declaring donations apply to all members of registered political parties, not just elected officials, and also covered MEPs during the specified period.
