F1 news LIVE: Lewis Hamilton ‘will not apologise’ to Ferrari after showing ‘fire in belly’ during Miami Grand Prix

Oscar Piastri has extended his lead at the top of the Drivers’ Championship after McLaren dominated the Miami Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen started on pole position after getting the better of both of McLaren’s championship-chasers in qualifying, with Lando Norris - who emerged victorious in Saturday’s sprint event - starting second on the grid.

Norris was pushed off the track soon after lights out, with Verstappen jostling at the front of the pack with Piastri before the Aussie pulled away. He only extended his advantage over the Dutchman for the remainder, crossing the line first and holding off a late resurgence from Norris, who took second.

Lewis Hamilton endured a frustrating race with teammate Charles Leclerc in toe, having started all the way back in 12th after a dismal qualifying session. The Brit finished eighth, behind his Ferrari colleague after being ordered to let the Monaco driver chase Kimi Antonelli at the back-end of the race - with tensions flaring between the seven-time champion and the team.

Key figure leaves Audi F1 team ahead of 2026 entry

15:00 , Reuters

Chief executive Adam Baker is leaving the Audi Formula One project by mutual agreement with Christian Foyer taking over his duties on the engine side, the future factory team have confirmed.

Foyer has joined the management board of Audi Formula Racing, the entity responsible for the hybrid powertrain, in the new role of chief operating officer. Baker's role has been eliminated.

Former Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto is head of the overall project with Jonathan Wheatley, who joined Swiss-based Sauber in April from Red Bull, leading the race operations as team principal.

Sauber, last in the constructors' standings after six races, are becoming the Audi factory team next season when the sport also starts a new engine era.

Audi's engines are being built in Bavaria but Sauber/Audi are also setting up an engineering base in Britain.

"We would like to thank Adam Baker for his commitment over the past years," said Gernot Doellner, chairman of the Volkswagen-owned brand, in a statement.

"He played a decisive role in shaping the overall strategic concept for the entry of Audi into Formula One and got the development of the power unit in Neuburg off the ground.

"With Christian Foyer, we are now bringing a proven expert in process structures in F1 powertrain development into the project.

"His experience will help ensure the synergistic cooperation and necessary speed on the journey we have embarked upon regarding the debut."

Baker was a veteran of the former BMW Sauber team, a project that soured and led to BMW's departure in 2009.

‘No bad feelings’ between Ferrari drivers after Miami GP radio spat, says Charles Leclerc

14:00 , Flo Clifford

Charles Leclerc has denied any bad blood between the Ferrari drivers after Lewis Hamilton was involved in a radio spat with team management during the Miami Grand Prix.

Hamilton started behind Leclerc in Sunday’s race and was frustrated by Ferrari’s decision not to immediately let him pass his teammate to gain ground on Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli.

Ferrari prevaricated before eventually giving him the go-ahead, leading Hamilton to exasperatedly tell them to “have a tea break while you’re at it,” but the seven-time world champion had lost the advantage of the faster tyres by the time the decision was made.

The Monegasque driver made it afterwards that the problem was with the team’s strategy, rather than between the drivers. “There's no bad feelings with Lewis, not at all,” he said.

Lewis Hamilton will not ‘apologise for being a fighter’ after Miami issues

12:00 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Lewis Hamilton said he will refuse to “apologise for being a fighter” as he defended his “PG” radio spat with Ferrari at the Miami Grand Prix.

Hamilton accused his team of having “a tea break” as they decided whether Charles Leclerc should be moved out of his way while they were running in seventh and eighth.

Ferrari ushered Leclerc aside, but when Hamilton failed to make any impression on his Mercedes’ replacement Kimi Antonelli ahead, the two drivers were ordered to trade positions again with four laps left.

F1 Academy is growing in relevance, says Aston Martin’s Jessica Hawkins

11:30 , Olivia Hicks

When Jessica Hawkins became the first woman in five years to test a modern Formula 1 car in 2023, her status as a role model in the sport was only beginning.

Hawkins was one of 32 women who drove across the W Series racing competition from 2019 to 2022. Once the motorsport series shuttered and Hawkins moved onto stunt driving and sports car racing, she became a vital link between F1 and F1 Academy, the all-female junior series.

When F1 announced all 10 teams would back an F1 Academy team following the series’ inaugural season in 2023, what that partnership would look like beyond a car logo or driver kit became hazy.

But Hawkins represents exactly how teams like Aston Martin support the feeder series designed to develop female racing talent. Last year, she joined as the team’s head of F1 Academy, an expanded version of her previous role supporting driver Tina Hausmann.

Lewis Hamilton suggests team orders spat shows 'fire in his belly'

10:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Lewis Hamilton has suggested that his spat with Ferrari during the Miami Grand Prix is indicative of the competitive spirit the seven-time world champion still has.

Hamilton clashed with his team over the radio during the race as a difficult start to the season continued, and admits improvements must be made.

"I've still got my fire in my belly,” Hamilton explained afterwards. “I could feel a bit of it really coming up there.

"I'm not going to apologise for being a fighter. I'm not going to apologise for still wanting it. I know everyone in the team does, too.

"I didn't think the decision came quick enough. And for sure, in that time you're like, 'Come on!' But that's really kind of it.

"I have no problems with the team or with Charles. I think we could do better. But the car is not where we really need to be. Ultimately we're fighting for seventh and eighth."

Oscar Piastri dominates Miami GP as Lewis Hamilton fumes over Ferrari race management

09:30 , Olivia Hicks in Miami

Oscar Piastri crossed the chequered flag in south Florida on Sunday 4.6 seconds ahead of McLaren teammate Lando Norris. Mercedes driver and third-place finisher George Russell was 37.6 seconds behind in a race where the virtual safety car played a significant role in the 2025 Miami Grand Prix.

Piastri, who qualified in fourth on Saturday, gained an advantage when a first-corner tussle between pole-sitter Max Verstappen and Norris had the latter falling down the leaderboard into sixth place. The McLaren driver, who secured his maiden win in Miami last year, unsuccessfully attempted to appeal to the stewards, claiming the four-time world champion pushed him off as Verstappen swept across the start.

Lewis Hamilton explains ‘sarcastic’ comments after row with Ferrari over radio during Miami Grand Prix

08:30 , Harry Latham-Coyle

Lewis Hamilton turned on the sarcasm to show his frustration with Ferrari in radio exchanges during the Miami Grand Prix.

The seven-time Formula 1 world champion told the Italian team to "have a tea-break while you're at it" after the pit wall finally confirmed teammate Charles Leclerc would let him through.

"This is not good team work, that's all I'm going to say," he had said earlier, complaining he was just "burning up my tyres" in the dirty air behind the Monegasque.

"So you want me to just sit here (behind Leclerc) the whole race?" he said as the team informed him of the gap to Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli ahead of Leclerc without giving any instruction on passing.

Former boss Toto Wolff insists Lewis Hamilton has not lost any of his magic

08:00 , Will Castle

Lewis Hamilton’s former boss Toto Wolff insisted the Ferrari driver has not lost any of his magic and backed him to recapture his form.

“We have seen that magic in the sprint race in Shanghai. He dominated that race, and it is not like you have that magic in one race, and then suddenly you lose it in the following one,” said Wolff ahead of Sunday’s Miami GP.

“I very much believe it is still there. If he aligns his performance contributors, is in the right space, and the car is to his liking, he will be stellar, and I have no doubt about that.”

Lando Norris suffered yet another defeat to teammate Oscar Piastri at the Miami GP

When previously asked if he fears the championship momentum is moving in teammate Piastri’s direction, Norris replied: “No, I am not worried at all.

“He (Piastri) is doing a good job and he deserves it.

“I don’t believe so much in momentum. Clearly I have made some mistakes, and not been at the level I need to be at. But I believe I can get there soon enough.”

Formula One has announced a record-long contract with the Miami Grand Prix until at least the 2041 season.

The 10-year extension, with the previous deal expiring in 2031, was announced on Friday ahead of the 2025 event starting at the Miami International Autodrome.

It is now F1’s longest current contract with a grand prix, with Australia the nearest with a deal until 2037.

F1 agrees extension with Mexican Grand Prix despite absence of key driver

03:00 , Flo Clifford

F1 has agreed a three-year extension with the Mexican Grand Prix, taking the race to at least the 2028 season.

Mexico City’s previous deal with the sport expired after this year’s race in October, with an extension seemingly up in the air given the absence of home hero Sergio Perez from this year’s grid.

But despite that, on Wednesday, F1 announced the contract extension, with a three-year deal taking the race at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez into a 13th year in the modern era.

Perez, who was dropped by Red Bull after a poor 2024 campaign, is also being strongly linked with a 2026 race seat at Cadillac, with the American-owned outfit joining the sport as an 11th team next season.

Charles Leclerc says 'no bad feelings' with Lewis Hamilton

02:30 , Will Castle

"There's no bad feelings with Lewis, not at all,” Leclerc reassured.

“Most of the time I say something, today I don’t think I’ll say anything.”

“I think the story is going to be big enough already. We need to do better, that’s for sure. Today was not ideal and was far from maximising our potential, but we’ve got to regroup as a team and be better.”

“I think we should have discussed a little bit more before doing the swap, because you’re trying to go to the end with those tyres.”

Carlos Sainz faces trip to the stewards with ninth finish in jeopardy

"But it is the way it is with Max, it's crash or don't pass.

"Yesterday was a tricky day,” he said. “Qualifying was one of my trickiest sessions of the year so to come away and win is an impressive result.

"A bit of argy-bargy at Turn 1 which helped me a bit. I was aware enough to avoid Max coming through in Turn 1.

"From that point onwards I knew I had a good pace advantage and clearly the car was unbelievable.

"The first stint was really strong. The hard stint, I was struggling a bit, so it was a good thing I built that gap in the first stint.

"Towards the end I started to get things a bit more under control, so there's still definitely some things to work on. Very happy with the win, very happy with the points.

"Constantly got to keep learning. Very happy to leave Miami on top."

While these two have been squabbling, Piastri has checked out - EIGHT SECONDS AHEAD!

Suddenly, the battle has become one for second rather than first. Norris is right on Verstappen’s tail, while Piastri is three seconds ahead!

Piastri has taken the lead! Verstappen runs wide and is forced on a dirty line, losing first to the championship leader.

He’s been taken by one McLaren, but he’s being pressured by the other. Norris has recovered and is wheel to wheel with Verstappen, once more.

Verstappen is defending superbly here. Piastri is pushing for the lead, but the Red Bull driver continues to cover from the inside and is keeping him behind.

But in all of this jostling for first, it’s giving Norris the chance to catch up!

Piastri is pushing for pole and is all over Verstappen.

The battle for the lead is well and truly on. He’s with a car-length of the Dutchman.

Elsewhere, Alonso has span out! He’s recovered but now finds himself in 18th.

Norris gets ANOTHER overtake on Antonelli

Norris is making up serious ground here. Antonelli is in his sights, who was earlier passed by Piastri.

And he’s got him!

No further investigation over the Verstappen-Norris incident

Norris won’t happy about this. No penalty for Verstappen after he was nudged off the track following lights out.

He’s responded by securing another overtake, producing an unorthodox pass on Russell.

Possible rain in 20 laps: 'It will be heavy'

Sunday 4 May 2025 21:14 , Will Castle

Just heard over the radio that we could be expecting rain in 20 laps - and if it does hit, it will be ‘heavy’.

Hamilton makes first overtake of the race

Hamilton, who started the race in 12th, has made up his first spot of the day as he overtakes Hadjar, who goes deep on the defence.

Piastri gets the overtake on Antonelli

Sunday 4 May 2025 21:12 , Will Castle

Piastri made that look easy! He’s been attacking Antonelli since the first lap and has now moved into second.

We’re into the fifth lap, with Norris passing Albon into fifth. He’s got a lot of ground to recover after that disastrous start.

GREEN FLAG! Virtual safety car ends

Sunday 4 May 2025 21:11 , Will Castle

We are back underway. Doohan has been cleared from the track.

Verstappen is setting about opening a lead over Antonelli, who is under pressure from Piastri.

Norris taking issue with Verstappen

Sunday 4 May 2025 21:08 , Will Castle

"He [Verstappen] forced me off mate,” Norris said on the team radio. “What am I meant to do? Just drive into the wall or something?

"Like I was completely alongside?"

It was wheel-to-wheel, and replays appear to show Verstappen nudging Norris off the track. Could we be seeing a penalty here?

VIRTUAL SAFETY CAR! Doohan suffers a puncture

Sunday 4 May 2025 21:07 , Will Castle

There’s a yellow flag as Doohan suffers a puncture.

And now there’s a virtual safety car! He took the tire straight off the rim and he’s now stopped on the track.

LIGHTS OUT AND AWAY WE GO!

Sunday 4 May 2025 21:06 , Will Castle

Verstappen looks like he locks up and Norris goes to try and overtake the Dutchman from the outset, but he goes off the track at the second corner and loses four places as a result!

Norris is in sixth, while Antonelli is into second while Piastri is in third.

What is the weather looking like?

Sunday 4 May 2025 20:29 , Will Castle

The weather has been temperamental in Miami, to say the least.

It was chucking it down ahead of the F1 Academy race, which was called off due to the deluge.

Conditions have since improved - it’s dried up significantly as we edge closer to lights out at 9pm. We’ve getting very lucky at the moment, with radars showing torrential rain passing either side of the track.

However, there is still a threat of more rain, and even lightning, in the area over the next couple hours.

We’ve got 57-lap race to come in half an hour, and I would be surprised if we make it through that without the heavens reopening.

You don’t see this every grand prix - fully drivable Lego cars will replace the usual drivers parade truck for the Miami GP!

Each team will have its own custom car in their own colours and liveries and will drive the 5.4km track in front of all the fans ahead of the race.

Three races, two teams – but F1 in the United States is still missing one key component

Sunday 4 May 2025 16:00 , Flo Clifford

The sorry sight of Floridian youngster Logan Sargeant trudging away from his burning Williams car last summer at the Dutch Grand Prix represented his final failed foray in Formula One. Quickly axed by team principal James Vowles, Sargeant lost his F1 seat after 36 races and one point. In doing so, a rare US presence among the 20-driver grid was no more.

Since Mario Andretti won the 1978 Dutch Grand Prix – the same year he claimed his sole F1 world championship, America’s only title to this day – no US driver has won a race. In fact, in the 47 years since, only Eddie Cheever in the 1980s has recorded more than one podium. Sargeant’s only point, awarded post-race in Austin in 2023, was America’s first point in the drivers’ standings since Mario’s son, Michael, finished third in Monza in 1994.

A puzzling record, you may think, for a sport which has in the last decade boomed almost unfathomably across the Atlantic. Miami, which debuted in 2022 a year ahead of the Las Vegas night race, hosts its fourth edition this weekend with its typical high-octane offering of sunshine, showbiz and style.

Miami GP LIVE

Sunday 4 May 2025 15:37 , Will Castle

Hello and welcome to The Independent’s live coverage of the Miami Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen starts in pole position after getting the best of both of McLaren’s championship-chasers in qualifying.

Oscar Piastri finished outside the top three for the first time this season during Saturday’s session, while Lando Norris was able to back up his win in the sprint with second, only 0.065s off Verstappen’s pace.

Lewis Hamilton, meanwhile, endured a dismal afternoon yesterday and will start the Miami GP all the way back in 12th, having gone out in Q2 for the first time at Ferrari.

We’ll have all the action and build-up, right here.
