England’s favourite and least favourite motorways revealed

  • A Transport Focus survey revealed 71 per cent of drivers were satisfied with England's motorways and major A roads, an increase from 69 per cent last year, with improvements noted in journey times and roadworks management.
  • The M27 in Hampshire was identified as the least satisfactory motorway, with only 56 per cent of drivers content, largely due to persistent roadworks and subsequent delays.
  • Conversely, Kent's M20 emerged as the nation's favorite motorway with a 79 per cent satisfaction rating, while the A30 was ranked the best A road.
  • Satisfaction with smart motorways increased to 66 per cent, attributed to the completion of 150 additional emergency refuge areas, though drivers still feel less safe on them than on conventional motorways.
  • National Highways is undertaking a five-year renewals program, signaling that England's road network is entering one of its largest maintenance periods, which is likely to involve more roadworks.
