England's World Cup 2022 squad shirt numbers should be announced by Tuesday

You won't have long if you want to get an England shirt with your favourite player's name on the back before the World Cup starts.

Or, for that matter, a Brazil shirt with Bruno Guimarães' number.

While most countries, including England, have named their 26-man playing squads for the 2022 World Cup, the final lists do not have to be submitted until Monday November 14. Each country taking part in the 32-team tournament can change their squad for injuries as long as they do so no later than one day before their opening match.

There are three Newcastle players in England's squad heading to the World Cup: Nick Pope, Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson. They are set to be joined at the World Cup by Bruno in the Brazil side, Fabian Schär in Switzerland's, and the soon-to-arrive Garang Kuol in Australia's.

Kuol's squad number, 21, has been confirmed by the Socceroos.

England are among the teams who have not confirmed shirt numbers yet, although it's safe to assume Wilson probably won't take 9, which he wears for Newcastle, as Harry Kane has had that in recent tournaments.

The World Cup starts on Sunday November 20 when hosts Qatar take on Ecuador. England's first match is on Monday November 21. They kick off against Iran at 1pm, UK time.

When will England's and other World Cup teams' squad shirt numbers be published?

Final lists are set to be submitted to FIFA by 6pm on Monday November 14, after the final round of pre-World Cup Premier League matches conclude on Sunday November 13.

FIFA says it will publish the squad lists in full - which should include shirt numbers - on Tuesday November 15.

England could choose to publish their shirt numbers on Monday when the FA submits its final list, or on Tuesday when FIFA reveals the final squads for the 32 countries taking part.

Can the World Cup squads and shirt numbers change?

After Monday, the only way teams taking part in the World Cup can alter their squads is if a player gets injured or ill before that team's first match. The player who comes in to replace the injured or sick squad member will take their number.

FIFA says: "If one of the players initially included in a squad list picks up an injury or contracts Covid-19, he may be replaced up to the day before the relevant team’s first match. In this situation, new call-ups do not necessarily have to feature on the 55-man release list. Any new player will be allocated the number of the player he is replacing in the squad."
