Elliott Dickman admits Joe White yet to hit expectations at Newcastle United

Joe White has not hit the expectations are yet to be reached this season - according to Newcastle United coach Elliot Dickman.

White put in a lukewarm performance at Barnsley in the EFL Trophy but is still not 100% fit after a spate of injuries. But Dickman is hoping for better in the weeks to come.

Dickman told Chronicle Live: "He’s slowly on his way back. There are bits in his game tonight which have been good, but we’re not going to settle for that, we want more.

"The expectations of Joe are really, really high, so, without putting too much pressure on Joe, he’s got to understand where he is and where he’s at.

"He’ll eventually get to the form he showed last season. He’s not too far away from it. The games will help it. I think that was his first 90 minutes.

"That’s good for him to get 90 minutes under his belt. He’s just got to build on that moving forward."

Newcastle sent White to Hartlepool on loan last season but did not manage to find him a club on deadline day meaning he must spend the first half of the campaign in the second string again. It was Steve Bruce who first brought him into training in 2019 but the former Carlisle kid is yet to make a Premier League team sheet under Eddie Howe.
