Edu and Arsenal face £30m transfer dilemma as Newcastle look to repeat Bruno Guimaraes plan

Newcastle are set to be a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming transfer windows after the change of ownership midway through last season. It is due to this that Arsenal could be one of the clubs that fall victim of the financial dominance of the Magpies.

According to Ben Jacobs from CBS Sports, Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk is hoping for a January move. One of the clubs reportedly interested in his services is Newcastle.

This comes after Ukrainian news outlet football24tv reported that Arsenal held talks with Mudryk’s agents and were interested in signing the player in the summer. The report went on to say that Shakhtar Donetsk are asking for €35million (£30million), but a deal never managed to materialise.

Amid such interest in Mudryk, it appears as though the youngster is very open to a move to Arsenal, who seemingly need more depth in their wide areas. Speaking to CBS Sports, he said: "I think every guy dreams about the Premier League. It's hard to say [who his preferred move is] but Arsenal is a very good team, very good coach, I like the way they play."

When asked if he would make a move to the Emirates Stadium he said: "From my side, I can't say no [to Arsenal]. But the transfer is not only my decision."

However, Newcastle continue to show their threat towards Arsenal in the transfer market ahead of the winter window. The Magpies have an excellent opportunity of stamping their marker in the winter window by signing Mudryk at the expense of Arsenal.

Eddie Howe added Bruno Guimaraes to his team in the January transfer window despite Arsenal also reportedly being interested in the midfielder. That decision caused unrest amongst the Gunners' fanbase.

Arsenal failed to sign a midfielder in the last winter window, which made losing out on Guimaraes feel even worse for fans of the north London side. He certainly would have improved Mikel Arteta’s midfield, who currently need to strengthen in the middle of the park.

The same situation cannot be afforded with Mudryk. Arteta has had problems with the wide areas this season due to the lack of quality in squad depth, and that could potentially hinder the club’s progress when the fixture schedule becomes congested. A new signing in this position needs to be addressed in the upcoming transfer windows, and Edu must be wary of Newcastle stealing the ideal target.
