Counting of votes for the high-profile Falta Assembly seat in West Bengal began under heavy security on Sunday, with officials from the Election Commission of India (ECI) closely monitoring the process.
Security personnel were deployed in large numbers outside the counting centres and strong rooms as the politically sensitive constituency witnessed intense attention following the recent repoll ordered by the ECI.
Trends from the Falta election result 2026 showed BJP candidate Debangshu Panda racing ahead with a huge lead over his rivals.
BJP Candidate Debangshu Panda Gains Advantage
As counting progressed through the morning, BJP’s Debangshu Panda emerged as the frontrunner in the Falta seat counting.
Congress candidate Abdul Razzak Molla and CPI(M) nominee Shambhu Kurmi remained in the contest, though numbers suggested Panda had secured a comfortable advantage.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC), meanwhile, faced an unusual situation after its candidate Jahangir Khan publicly announced just before the repoll that he would no longer contest the seat. The party later described his decision as a personal one.
Why Was Repolling Held In Falta?
The Falta Assembly constituency first went to polls on April 29 during the second phase of the West Bengal Assembly elections 2026. However, days later, the Election Commission ordered a complete repoll across all 285 booths in the constituency following serious allegations of electoral irregularities.
Complaints included claims of EVM tampering, voter intimidation and obstruction at several polling stations in South 24 Parganas district.
Reports from polling day alleged that buttons linked to BJP candidates on certain Electronic Voting Machines had been partially covered with white tape. There were also accusations that many voters were prevented from casting their votes.
Following an inquiry conducted by special poll observer Subrata Gupta, the ECI decided to cancel the earlier polling and ordered fresh voting in the entire constituency.
Huge Voter Turnout Recorded During Repoll
The repoll held on May 21 witnessed a remarkably high turnout, with more than 87 per cent of the constituency’s 2.36 lakh voters casting their ballots.
To avoid further controversy, the Election Commission significantly tightened security arrangements by deploying nearly 35 companies of central forces throughout the constituency.
Several local residents claimed the repoll was one of the few times they had managed to vote peacefully without fear, pressure or political intimidation.
Falta Seat Remains Politically Crucial In Bengal
Falta remains an important Assembly constituency under the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha seat, currently represented by senior TMC leader Abhishek Banerjee.
In the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, TMC candidate Shankar Kumar Nashkar had won the seat comfortably with a margin of around 41,000 votes.
During the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the constituency reportedly gave Abhishek Banerjee a lead of nearly 1.2 lakh votes, although opposition parties had questioned the fairness of the polling process at the time.
With the Falta election result 2026 now under national spotlight, political observers are closely watching whether the BJP can turn its lead into a significant victory in the constituency.
