East Renfrewshire Council ready to hand over keys to 90 new homes

East Renfrewshire Council will begin handing tenants the keys to 90 brand new homes over the coming months.

Following the completion last year of 39 council houses as part of Taylor Wimpey’s Maidenhill development, a further 43 homes are set to be handed over throughout the summer including a mix of cottage flats, terraced houses, semi-detached and detached homes.

New tenants will also be moving into the Balgraystone Road development in Barrhead this spring which is being delivered in partnership with Glasgow-based contractor CCG (Scotland).

This is the council’s largest new-build project to date with 47 properties consisting of six one-and-two-bedroom wheelchair adaptable flats, 12 two-bedroom flats and 29 three-and-four-bedroom terraced houses.

These homes have been constructed using CCG’s enhanced ‘iQ’ Timber System which results in a vast reduction in heat loss with lower energy demand contributing to lowering carbon emissions and generating annualised savings on energy bills.

The innovation in these developments, which are part-funded by the Scottish Government, is contributing to the council’s Get to Zero strategy where our goal is improve the energy efficiency of our homes as well as other tenures across East Renfrewshire.

Housing and maintenance convener Danny Devlin said: “Balgraystone Road is the largest housing development we’ve taken on to date and will soon provide much-needed homes to individuals and families.

"Last year, with Taylor Wimpey, we completed our first new-build homes in Newton Mearns for a generation and I am really pleased that the next phases will provide more new homes this summer.

"East Renfrewshire continues to be an extremely popular place to live and this is why the council begun its ambitious house build project back in 2018; the results of which continue to deliver families and individuals with high-quality, affordable homes in our communities. Both of these developments reflect our aspirations and I would wish our new tenants all the best as they move into their new homes this year.”

Alison Henderson, special projects manager for Taylor Wimpey West Scotland added: “The completion and handover of the first 39 affordable homes for social rent at Maidenhill in 2021 was the result of true partnership working and delivery between ourselves and the local authority.

"Those first handovers form part of our wider agreement to deliver a total of 82 affordable homes for social rent, as well as 20 homes across the development which will be provided at a reduced market value as part of our affordable home obligation.

"In overall terms the Maidenhill development is bringing significant investment and creating local jobs across the area, including some exciting opportunities for young apprentices, and we’ll continue to work closely with East Renfrewshire Council and the local community.

CCG managing director David Wylie said: “Balgraystone Road is a fantastic development of 43 affordable, highly-energy efficient homes and we look forward to bringing the project to a close this spring and welcoming the new residents. We give thanks to East Renfrewshire Council for their support during the construction programme and look forward to working with them again in the near future.”
