Dublin Airport confirms welcome return of drop-off points outside Terminal after summer ban

Dublin Airport has once again allowed passengers to be dropped off outside Terminal 1 - reversing a rule which had been introduced earlier this summer to help with crowd control.

Back in May, queues at security coupled with a lack of staff being available led to Dublin Airport bosses urging people not to turn up before two hours prior to their flight.

Otherwise, they would have been put in a specified waiting area - leading to many complaints from disgruntled passengers.

That decision, taken as part of an emergency plan by chiefs, meant that friends and family were no longer able to drop passengers outside Terminal 1.

But on Thursday evening, the airport's social media accounts explained that the decision had been reversed.

A spokesperson wrote: "Passenger drop-offs directly outside Terminal 1 will be possible again from 10am this morning as we re-open the Departures Road. This is part of a further phased stand down of contingency measures that were put in place at Dublin Airport during the summer.

"Further changes, including the return of bus drop-offs & pick-ups to the regular area behind the Atrium, will follow over the coming days. Please keep an eye on our website & social media channels for updates. We thank passengers for their patience as we make these changes."

The current advice from Dublin Airport is:

  • Allow 2 hours before a short-haul flight, and 3 hours before a long-haul flight.
  • If checking a bag, verify your airline’s check-in & bag drop desk opening times, and if possible, allow up to one hour of additional time to check-in luggage.
  • Security in T1 is now open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
  • Security in T2 opens at 04.00, so people flying from T2 should factor this in.
