Video captures shocking moment double-decker bus crashes into taxi and hits shopfront in Westminster

A double-decker bus collided with a taxi before veering off the road and crashing into a dentist in central London, new video footage has shown.

The emergency services rushed to the collision at around 1.39pm on Tuesday on Great Peter Street in Westminster.

Dash cam footage captured by a taxi shows the moment the number 3 bus struck a black cab as it turned onto the street before losing control and mounting the pavement.

The bus can be seen pushing the taxi onto the pavement with it before it strikes the front door of a dentist’s studio.

Just moments earlier a pedestrian had been seen getting out of the cab while several people were seen walking on the busy road just seconds before the bus crash.

Several pedestrians quickly rush over to the bus and check if those onboard are okay.

One passenger quickly steps off the bus followed by the driver.

Transport for London confirmed on Tuesday a bus collided with a black cab and that an investigation is underway to find out more about what caused the crash.

Images of the aftermath showed the bus, which was heading towards Crystal Palace, smashed into SW1 Dental Studio while the taxi can be seen on the pavement next to the vehicle. Several fire engines and ambulances were also spotted at the scene.

Hassan Waheed, who witnessed the aftermath of the crash, told the Standard the double-decker had crashed into a black cab before both vehicles slammed into the dentist, leaving the taxi driver wedged inside his vehicle.

He said: “The Black cab driver was trapped and they managed to get him out. It took a few hours to clear the scene.

“The angle in which the bus hit the taxi made it difficult, but they did manage to get him out safely.

Mr Waheed added that it was “very lucky” that the bus had not hit a Pret A Manger next door to the dentist, which has large glass windows.

He pointed out how there are civil service buildings nearby, and school children and tourists had been in the area.

The London Ambulance Service said it assessed four patients at the scene and one person was taken to hospital.

A Transport for London spokesperson told the Standard: "We’re working with bus operator Transport UK to investigate the cause of a collision earlier today on Great Peter Street.

“Our thoughts are with the one person who is believed to have been injured and with anyone else impacted by this distressing incident. We have support available for anyone affected.”

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson added: “We were called today (Tues 7) at 1.39pm to reports of a road traffic collision in Great Peter Street, Westminster, SW1.

“We sent resources including ambulance crews, an incident response officer, a paramedic on a motorcycle and members of our hazardous area response team (HART).

“We assessed four patients at the scene. Three people declined treatment and one was taken to hospital.”
