Diarmuid O'Carroll described as 'great asset' as St Mirren coach handed Northern Ireland role

Saints assistant coach Diarmuid O'Carroll has been handed a key role for the Northern Ireland national team.

But the Paisley club insist he will remain in his current job working alongside Stephen Robinson as the pair try to steer the Buddies to an historic top-six finish.

O'Carroll has played a big part in St Mirren's success so far this season, with the likes of Ethan Erhahon recently complimenting the 35-year-old on how he's helped his development.

Now Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill has brought O'Carroll into his set up as they prepare to set out on their UEFA Euro 2024 qualification campaign.

St Mirren today announced he would remain in his post in Paisley but would also take on the role of "senior coach working alongside Michael O’Neill and his newly appointed backroom team".

And O'Neill believes O'Carroll will have a big impact after watching him in action working with the Saints players.

He said: "I have watched Diarmuid in action on the training ground and he is a vibrant young coach.

"I believe he will be a great asset to us."
