Destructoid Gamescom Awards 2025: Best Announcement — Valor Mortis

Gamescom 2025 had a lot of surprises big and small, but none really captured our attention quite like Valor Mortis. This indie title from the minds behind Ghostrunner blends Napoleonic French vibes with Prototype horror, and we're all for it.

During Gamescom 2025's Opening Night Live, we were given a sneak peek at Valor Mortis, a new horrifying action-RPG from the devs behind the iconic first-person action series Ghostrunner. Set in Napoleonic times, Valor Mortis is a first-person title where body-altering chemicals grant immense power to whoever consumes them, and oftentimes turn the wielders into horrifying monstrosities, much akin to Prototype and Resident Evil.

In the sea of announcements during ONL at Gamescom 2025, Valor Mortis stood out to us with its aesthetics, horror, and unique setting, and, though it was just a little peek at what is to come, we saw enough to award this upcoming title the Best Gamescom 2025 Announcement award.

Valor Mortis is slated for release in 2026, with more details on the game to be unveiled leading up to launch.

What we do know is you're a soldier of Napoleon risen from the dead in a world where corruption breeds power and death is only the beginning. I am super excited to see what else this title has in store for us, and hopefully we won't have to wait long.

And, if it's anywhere near the quality offered by Ghostrunner—it's almost guaranteed to be a good time.
