Dermot Gallagher queries Willie Collum as he weighs into Rangers VAR handball debate

Former referee Dermot Gallagher believes the officials were correct not to award Rangers a penalty during Saturday's derby showdown against Celtic.

Ibrox manager Philippe Clement was incensed at full-time after feeling his side were denied a spot-kick when Alistair Johnston appeared to handle the ball in the penalty box when grappling with Abdallah Sima.

Referee Nick Walsh did not spot the handball, but VAR official Willie Collum reviewed the incident before deeming the hand to be in a natural position.

It later emerged that Sima was offside in the build-up to the incident, but Rangers were still left disappointed by the officiating and have written to the SFA to request the VAR audio from the incident.

On the call, Gallagher told Sky Sports News: "I think there are a few issues. I think Alistair Johnston rode his luck on Saturday.

"He was fortunate not to give a penalty away there and I think he could have easily been sent off later in the game, but that is the nature of the game.

"This incident was checked for a penalty. Willie Collum the VAR felt no penalty so therefore the goal kick was given.

"People say later they found the offside, but don't forget if the penalty had been given the next check would have been the APP. The attacking phase.

"Once they check that they would have seen the offside, so although the penalty would have been given, it would have then been disallowed because the offside came first.

"Whatever way you look at it, saying it came to light later in the game, it doesn't matter because it would have came to light once the penalty was given."

He continued: "The decision check was on the penalty. Willie Collum the VAR felt no. So once he says no penalty he doesn't have to check the attacking phase.

"He has decided there is not enough to give the handball. I think Alistair Johnston is lucky because you can clearly see he moves his hand to the ball.

"He has given a goal kick because it bounces off Sima, that was the referee's decision.

"Once he has given a goal kick that is the decision because the offside would never be checked because it didn't matter.

"It would have only mattered if the penalty was given."
