Delhi rain: Thunderstorms disrupt flights; advisories issued by DIAL, IndiGo, Spicejet amid IMD's red alert

Delhi-NCR witnessed a sudden change in weather on Thursday evening as heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, and strong dust storms swept across several parts of the national capital. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert for the next few hours, warning residents about severe weather conditions and gusty winds of up to 80 kmph.

According to the IMD, moderate to severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, dust storms, and isolated hailstorms are likely to continue across Delhi and adjoining regions. Weather officials said the current spell of rain and thunderstorm activity is expected to persist till May 31.

Meanwhile, Delhi airport and major airlines issued travel advisories as adverse weather disrupted flight operations in the national capital. Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) warned passengers that some flights may be delayed or affected due to thunderstorms and rapidly changing weather conditions. Travelers were advised to check flight updates with their respective airlines and consider using the Delhi Metro to avoid traffic congestion while heading to the airport.

“Due to inclement weather conditions and expected thunderstorms in Delhi, some flights might be impacted at Delhi Airport. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Passengers can consider alternative modes of transport, including the Delhi Metro, to get to the airport and avoid potential delays,” the advisory issued by DIAL stated.
